Obituary For Bernice Walsh (Doran)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Bernice Walsh. She passed away peacefully on February 17 at the QEII hospital in Halifax in the arms of her loving family. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Gerard Michael Walsh and her 7 children, Sharon (Bruce), Debora, Moya, Gerard (Joanne), Margot, Helen and Mark, siblings, Bill (Dana), Helen, Jeannie (Mario) and Barbara; she is pre-deceased by Basil, Lorraine and Rosemary. She was Nannabun to her 16 grandchildren, Rebecca, Victoria, Samuel, Maggie, Benjamin, Seamus, Noah, Gerard, John, Edward, Molly, Emma, Eric, Christopher, Katie and Jack.

Born in St. John’s, NL, Bernice was the eldest daughter of the late William (Bill) Doran and Gertrude (Power). Though family was the most important thing to Bernice, she also enjoyed great success outside of the home. While raising seven children, she was a broadcaster and had a weekly consumer affairs programme on CBC Radio in St. John’s for many years. She enjoyed afternoons spinning records on VOWR. Always an advocate, she was the Assistant Deputy Minister of Provincial Consumer Affairs in NL, was involved with the Jaycettes, the Canadian Housing Design Council, the Consumers’ Association of Canada, and the Funeral Directors and Embalmers Assoc. of NL. She had an eye for design and architecture and later in life Bernice became an accomplished real estate agent with Pat King Real Estate winning awards for her achievements.

Our family is very appreciative of the extraordinary and compassionate care Bernice received from all the nurses on ward 8.2 of the QEII, Dr. Stephen Workman and Dr. John Gale. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the QEII Foundation Halifax https://qe2foundation.ca/ways-give/remember-life Or call 1 888 428 0220 or by mail to the QEII Foundation, 5657 Spring Garden Road, Park Lane Mall, Box 231, NS, B3J 3R4

In accordance with Bernice’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A Celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Met Bernice as we served on the Funeral Directors Board together during the'80's. She was building her house on Patrick St. We worked together on a proposal for PrePaid Funerals. She was and still is an inspiration in my life.

I felt so sad to hear in July Bernice passed in Feb. My family loved Bernice and Gerard, as we first met at Cornwall Cres. Wells home in the 60's. They were so much fun! In later yrs. my Mother Libby spent many good times w them in their home on Ordient St. across fr. NL. hotel. Libby called them the Bee Gees. They had good times too at Reeve's Pl. when they visited in the late 80's? and 90's. Bernice and i would have chats on intuitive spiritualism, we both took an interest in this. She was the first one to call me Andi, a nick-name i use today at my workplace w CG at sea. Bernice called Libby Feb. 2018, as she felt something wasn't good w Mom. Sure enough she was right. Libby couldn't speak at the time, as she was very ill, and passed Mar. 17th. 2018. I truly feel Libby and Bernice are having a few laughs together on the other side. They always did while here in the physical, laughing, even in the tough times they managed to. Such strong gals they were, we will miss them always. Til we meet again.

You are all in my thoughts.

Someone has ceased to come along with me, someone so exuberant, someone who loved her family more than anything else in her amazingly accomplished life, someone who honoured me with her friendship for nearly thirty years someone who always somehow sensed when I was having some sort of crisis, someone who always stayed in touch, someone who had the biggest heart and most wonderful personality, someone who I will deeply miss for the rest of my days. Bernice, my someone, the tears roll out of my eyes like boulders. Your ever loving friend, Stuart.

Mr. Walsh ,Sharon, Debora, Moya, Gerard, Margot, Helen and Mark. My sincere sympathy on the passing of your beloved wife and mom. I have wonderful memories of many happy times in the big house on Burke. Mrs. Walsh/your mom was always so welcoming to many children who grew up on the circle. The sleep overs in the big bedroom were great fun as were games/ TV in the family room. May Mrs. Walsh /your mom rest in peace. I hope your happy memories help to ease your sorrow at this time.
