Obituary For Fred Hobin

Our brother, Fred, passed away April 17, 2019. A son of the late Michael and Bessie (Shiers) Hobin. Mom passed away when we were very young and our oldest sister, Bernice, left school at the tender age of 13 to take on the role as “mother.”

Fred enjoyed a good book, a lively political discussion, and a chicken burger so much that he walked from Halifax to Bedford to get one. He was an avid Montreal Canadien’s fan. He loved the Hab’s so much that he wore their jersey with great pride.

Fred is survived by sister, Jean (David) Ardley, Dartmouth. Brother, Terry (Dolly) Hobin, Tantallon. Sister-in-law, Violet Hobin, Hamilton, ON. Many nieces and nephews, grand nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews.

Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by paternal grandparents John & Ellen (Duggan) Hobin and maternal grandparents Frederick & Edith (Brown) Shiers. Sisters, Bernice (Patrick) Benoit and Carol (John) Benoit. Brothers, Donald (Alice) (Carmel) and Eric. John & June in infancy.

Cremation has taken place. The funeral service will take place Friday, April 26th at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax at 11:00 a.m. Deacon Art Mitchell officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home. Interment in Gates of Heaven Cemetery.

Special thanks to the staff of St. Vincent Nursing Home for their care and compassion during Fred’s stay. Also to the V.G. Hospital, 5B for their care and comfort while Fred was a patient.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hope Cottage, Soul’s Harbour Rescue Mission or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

I just found out today that Fred went on to heaven to do the finer things he enjoyed like hanging out with his grandpa, brothers and friends, fishing, telling stories, sharing a good read or a good joke! I "hung out" with Fred a few times while he was on 5B and thoroughly enjoyed his company. While wheeling him outside in front of the VG we talked about the time "the doctor zapped me" as he put it with the crash cart, his much loved times out fishing, and his cravings for a plain donut(which he thoroughly enjoyed each time I brought some). I still remember him looking like a child smiling with his bag of freshly cooked donuts! I wish I could have been there to hear more stories of Fred, he seemed like a well read man, a humble soul, who always, always hated to bother those busy nurses. I will cherish my memories of him and wish you his family the same! GO HABS GO!! Happy Fishin' in heaven, Fred!
