Obituary For George Friis (Chief Petty Officer Ret'd)

George Friis, (Chief Petty Officer Ret'd)

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our devoted husband, exceptional father, proud Grampy & Great Grampy on May 2nd in Halifax.

George grew up in Ontario & came to NS as a navy recruit to Cornwallis where shortly after met the love of his life, Maurreen to whom he was married for almost 65 years.

George was in the Navy for 22 years serving all over the world as well as the Korean War. He kept in touch with many of his Navy Buddies and organized many reunions over the years.

He also worked at Western Furniture, the Halifax Dartmouth Bridge Commission and Sylvania Lighting. George always had time to listen, lend a helping hand and to try to make everyone feel special with a smile, joke or a story. He was a rare gentleman & always put everyone else’s needs before his own. He had a strong faith & was very active at St Philips Church for many years & recent member of Trinity United. He was a regular volunteer at Hope Cottage. George put his talents into his vegetable gardens & always had some kind of project on the go either at home or the cottage. He loved to have his family come over for supper or just a visit with “a hot cuppa tea”

He will forever be loved & missed by his wife Maureen (Hfx), daughters Cindy Harley (David Williamson) Kentville, Heidi Friis (Darrell Lundrigan) Hatchet Lake, Grandchildren Jason Harley (Erin) Toronto, Jenna Bradley (Nathan) Kentville, Amanda Lundrigan, Dartmouth and Bryan Lundrigan (Carolyn Lindell) Louisiana, GreatGrandchildren George, Logan & Declan. And his Ontario family, sister Marnie Mardlin (Ken), brother Bev Friis (Marianne) & many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest daughter Sheila Friis.

Cremation has taken place & memorial service will be at a later date. In memory of George donations may be made to Hope Cottage.

Dear Maureen and family, I was so very saddened to hear of George's passing. We were neighbours on William Hunt and he was one of the first people that stopped to talk and welcome us when we moved in to Westmount. He was one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to have known, a true gentleman with a fine wit! He would follow my gardening exploits with great interest and always gave a little wave and 'how's the public gardens' on his daily walks by. When we moved a street over to Ralph Devlin I would always see him and Maureen walking by and they would always stop to chat, I was very sad to see them move out of the area. Our sincere sympathies are with your family at such a difficult time, but may his lovely cheerful memories help sustain you in the years ahead. Thinking of you all, Susan, John, Olivia and Alex Mahtab

Maureen, Cindy David, Heidi Darrell and family, Maureen and George were a great team. They raised three wonderful and caring daughters but what could be expect with two parents like George and Maureen. As I wander though St Phillips or sit in my yard in Westmount I can never forget this mischief and caring man. George has big shoes to fill but his love of his family "his girls" the boys and the grandchildren hopefully will sustain all of you through this difficult time. We are thinking of you Maureen, our thoughts and prayers are with you Eric

Maureen, so sad to hear about George. I didn't know him good personally, but through Dad, I felt like I did. The few times I saw him, he was always so nice and made me laugh. I'd like to think that he and Dad are having a good chat and getting caught up. Prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

Maureen and family. Saddened to hear of George's passing. He was a good guy. Having been the kid next door, to my work related dealings with George, to the off chance meeting, he always made me smile. Greg

I am best friends with George's grandfaughter Amanda. Before I even knew Amanda I knew her grandparents. I remember so many days of sitting on his lap in my own grandparents living room with a piece of rope as he taught me how to tie knots. He was such a lovely man with a large, very kind heart. My condolences to the whole family. -Amanda L
