Obituary For Hazel Ruth Harlow (Kirk)

Passed peacefully in VG Palliative Care on December 5th, 2019 at age 75 with her daughters and family by her side. She was born in Goldenville to the late John W. Kirk and Margaret (MacDonald) Kirk. She grew up in the family homestead in Glenelg, Guysborough County until moving to Halifax for work. That’s where she met her late husband George F. Harlow and had two daughters Nancy Lynn and Georgina (Ruth). Hazel worked for Halifax Regional Water where she retired after 31 years service on September 30, 2002. She is survived by her daughter Nancy (Stephen) and G. Ruth. Sisters Elizabeth (Victor) Mason, Elvira Gerrior and Genevieve (George) Gaudet and sister in-law Shirley Kirk and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George F. Harlow, her parents John W. Kirk and Margaret (MacDonald) Kirk, brothers Howard and Graham and his wife Cecelia. Lost 3 siblings in infancy. Hazel was an avid bridge player who earned her Ruby Life Masters. When Hazel was not playing bridge you could find her at home playing cards with her sisters. She looked forward to coffee with the HRWC ladies on Tuesdays once a month and Saturday nights at Bingo. She loved her cats Cindy Lou and Lily Pad. She made many friends over the years and cherished every one of them.

Many thanks to Dr Bruce Colwell and Oncology team and Dr Janice MacGregor family physician. A special thank you from her daughters and family for the exceptional care she received at VG 7a Palliative Care for making her final weeks as comfortable as they could and MAID team Dr Horton, Dr Chisholm and Nurse Monica for helping her on her next journey as well as Heather Britten singing John Denver “Annie's Song “ as she passed on. Cremation has taken place through Donald K Walker funeral and cremation services. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to charity of your choosing.

Please join us for Celebration Of Life on Saturday December 14, 2019 at 1:00pm at Calvin Presbyterian Church ay 3311 Ashburn Ave with Rev. Michael Koslowski officiating. Reception to follow. Hazel’s Burial to follow in Glenelg, Guysborough Co; Riverside Cemetary on a later date.

    Hazel was a great lady. Always friendly and upbeat. The love of her family, especially her daughters made her strong. She will be greatly missed as a friend and a bridge partner/opponent. We hope that great memories of her will help to ease the loss for her family.

    Nancy & Ruth.... your Mom (Aunt Hazel) was an amazing woman and I know how much you will miss her. Her spirit will live on in the memory of everyone she had the opportunity to befriend.     Our deepest sympathy to all the family. I saw Hazel at church the last time I was home. She was such a fighter! I have lots of great memories from when we were all kids and visited back and forth between houses. As cousins we always had lots of interaction. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
