Obituary For Jacob Scott Hamilton

Hamilton, Jacob Scott Age 24, Halifax

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Jacob on December 5, 2018 in Halifax. Jacob was the beloved son of Lynn Hamilton (Balcom) and Scott Hamilton; half-sibling to Chere and Randy; grandson of Joan Marie Balcom and the late Paul Balcom and Bess and Doug Waterfield. He was a cherished uncle, nephew and cousin. Jacob was pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at Dalhousie University, majoring in Neuroscience and was active in many facets of university life. He was a long-time student employee and volunteer for Student Affairs and was an active supporter of the Dal After Dark and ProSocial programs. At the 2016 Dalhousie Student Impact Awards, Jacob was named a Rising Star for his contributions to Dalhousie and the local community. Jacob loved working with HRM Aquatics and was a long-time employee. He taught swimming lessons, lifeguarded and became a deeply valued staff member providing leadership in several supervisory positions. Jacob was passionate about reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues through his work on the Dalhousie campus, Laing House and several committees at the IWK. He was an intelligent and articulate young man and was often invited to speak to raise awareness about mental illness. He was an outspoken force and often challenged traditional thoughts and norms. Scouting was an important part of Jacob’s life. He was an active participant and a natural born leader and thoroughly enjoyed the Scouting comradery. Jacob was a talented pianist and successfully completed the requirements for Grade 9 examination in piano. He competed in many Kiwanis Music Festivals often receiving recognition. He loved getting together with friends to jam. Jacob touched the lives of many, giving his love and support to anyone who needed it. He had an infectious enthusiasm and put people at ease with his kind and generous spirit. We will miss Jacob beyond what words can express. A celebration of Jacob’s life will be held Wednesday, December 12th at 2 pm at Rockingham United Church, 12 Flamingo Dr. Halifax with Rev. Debbie Aitken officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Donations in Jacob’s memory may be made to Laing House, IWK Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences: www.donaldkwalker.ca

Sincerest of sorrows hearing about Jacob. Both through our overlapping work in mental health, as well as supervising swimming lessons for my children, Jacob was a true advocate and leader. I will miss his joyous nature, creative insight, and drive to move the needle in mental health.

Jacaob was an amazing young man who touched so many lives. He was such warm, compassionate, and caring person who always had a smile, and time, for those he encountered. He was adored by those at Needham pool who had the joy of doing aqua-fit with him, or swimmers (like me), who enjoyed a chat at the end of a long swim. We talked about many things: swim strokes, music, travel, his studies, but until I read his obituary, i had no idea of his many accomplishments, and all the wonderful community work he was involved in. The world has lost a beautiful soul! My deepest, heartfelt condolences go to his family and all who loved him. He will be missed many!

Jacob was always such a joy to be around. I'll never forget the race we ran / walked together just before Canada day this summer. I was in a terrible mood that day, but his buoyant mood kept me going. Jacob had a tendency of keeping his internal struggles very well hidden while being so supportive of everyone else around him. His passing is a great loss to the community and he will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to the family. May he rest in peace.

Jacob was adored by all those at Colby Pool. Everyone loved working for him and we were all inspired by his positivity and outgoingness to all those he came across. No matter how I was feeling, everyday when I came into work and was greeted by Jacob a smile came across my face. Jacob will forever be remembered in all of our hearts as one of the most kind, caring, compassionate, and genial people we have ever known. Thank you Jacob for all you have done for us.

I did presentations with Jacob and he was always professional, but funny. He once drove a friend of mine and myself back to Halifax after getting stranded, and we joked and laughed the entire way. I've seen him present many, many times, and leave an incredible impact on the audiences he reached. He was kind and witty and I'm going to miss his presence so much. I'm so sorry to his family, I know the loss you're suffering through right now is unimaginable, and my thoughts are with you in this difficult time. He will not be forgotten.
