Obituary for John Russell Levangie

It is with great sadness, the family of John Russell Levangie announces his passing on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the age of 72 years. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Russell Joseph Levangie and Edith Catherine (Corbett) Levangie.
Although living with Parkinson’s disease for 30 years, John never lost his zest for life, with his amazing and supportive wife Marie always by his side. John attended St. Mary’s University for Commerce and received a Masters degree at Dalhousie University in Public Administration. He later worked for the Department of Education as Executive Director of Finance. He served on the National Parkinson’s Board in Toronto. John loved golf, woodworking and travel. He met many good friends in the last couple of years when he started playing darts, and his favourite pastime was watching any sporting event.
He is survived by his beloved wife Marie. John was very proud of his children, sons Mike (Dawn) Levangie, Bryan (Jennifer) Levangie and daughter Colette (Reno) Barbati. He adored his grandchildren Kaitlyn, Bailey, John, Eric, Francesco and Avella. He’ll lovingly be remembered by his siblings Anne (Tom) Anthes, Jeanne Savell and Billy (Sandy) Levangie.
John will be missed by many, but remembered by all. As per his request, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks to live your life as John had, with being kind to one another and to always celebrate your life with family and friends.
*We will always carry your memory in our hearts*

Marie, Colette and the whole Levangie family. On behalf of myself and my family (including Bronc and Sergine), I wanted to offer my sincere sympathies. We are sending all of our love and thoughts your way. John was such a terrific man - so smart and hard-working and kind. He made me feel so welcome in your home during law school and beyond. He had a way of making everyone around him feel like a million bucks. I have so many memories of the love, laughter and happiness at the dinner table, over lobster, in John's workshop and of how he (gently) encouraged Colette and I to think and re-think our arguments and opinions about law and politics. Love and condolences from Kristi (Rafael and the kids) and all of the Sebalj family.

Dear Marie, Mike, Bryan, & Colette, Anne & Tom, Jeanne, Billy & Sandy, Tom & I extend our condolences to you and to your families. I remember feeling proud when I learned it was my cousin John, who had a "big" job at the Department of Education when I first became a teacher. The photo accompanying this obituary says it all. This is John the way I remember him in the years before his illness; young, happy, full of fun, vibrant energy and potential. One of the clearest snapshots in memory is John & beautiful, gentle Marie walking down the isle just after they had married. I was an impressionable teenager at the time and their gorgeous images remain to this day. Seventy-two years of age seems much younger than it once did, and for John's passing at this "young" age and for all the years of illness, we feel much sadness. I've always wanted to believe that heaven is just a conversation away, and so to John we say; "Farewell dear cousin. We wish you peace, but more than this, we wish you the freedom of spirit your illness curtailed in this life, with the fervant hope that you are able to blissfully reconnect with all your loved ones gone before - your mom & dad, the siblings who passed before you got to meet them, Steve, Grandma & Grandpa Corbett, too may aunts, uncles & friends to name here, but we would be so glad if it included Sam, Connie & Marilou. John, we will remember you always". Much love, Linda Levangie & Tom Cross

I met John at St.Pats High in 1962 when we were members of the PLF Militia for two years. We spent some time together at St. Marys U. as well. To say that John was the epitome of cool is an understatement! He taught my two sons the finer points of pinball in less than an hour at The Silver Bullet many years ago! Always a class act my condolences to the family.. Bill & Joanne Dolan

Marie,Anne, and Jeanne: I was saddened to hear of John's passing. I grew up in the same neighborhood as John and we went to Oxford School, St. Pat's High School, and St Mary's at the same time. Later, we would meet each other occasionally, usually at a sporting event or at the Casino. Each time, John and I would talk about family, old friends etc, without any reservations. John had the great ability to make you feel comfortable and at ease, even though we probably hadn't seen each other for five or ten years. One of the nicest people I ever knew. Gene Carew

Marie, Colette, Mike, Bryan and all the Levangie family Susan and I wish to express our condolences on John's passing. Over the many years I knew John I came to admire him a great deal. Regardless of what undertaking he chose to pursue he did it with a passion that saw him succeed every time, from playing pool to building homes. We will always remember our days in Florida playing golf, lying around the pool and enjoying evening socials with fondness. He was a special person in every sense. I am pleased to have been counted among his friends. Mike and Sue

Marie and family, we're so sorry to hear of John's passing. I first met John in 1987 when he hired me to work with him in the Department of Education. It was a great working relationship and we probably spent too much time golfing and skiing!! I didn't see him much after he left Education but I know he lived life to the fullest despite his limitations. More recently, I came back into contact with him when I was playing music at Parkstone. I could tell he enjoyed the music and it was good to reminisce with him. He and Marie made a great couple and I know he will be sadly missed.

Dear Marie, Anne and Tom both Diane and I want to extend our deepest sympathies on John's passing. I remember the fun that was shared in our teen years at movies, in the schoolyard , at the Boathouse and the hockey rinks. John was an integral member of the Town and Country Juvenile Hockey Championship Team that I coached. Marie, we fondly remember our golf game at Chester with you and John that we shared at one of the ST. Pat's reunions. What a fun time!
