Obituary For Nancy Margo Balcom

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Nancy on November 24, 2019 at home. She had been diagnosed with cancer two years ago. Nancy was the beloved mother of Laura; wonderful daughter of Joan Marie and the late Paul Balcom; best baby sister to Lynn Hamilton and Michael (Sandy) Balcom; and a cherished aunt to Christopher (Megan) and Cory (Michelle) Balcom and the late Jacob Hamilton.

Nancy obtained a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Dalhousie University in 1988. She was most recently employed by Manulife as a Business Systems Analyst. Prior to this she held positions with CGI as a Senior Consultant, and a Pension Administration Supervisor with Maritime Life. Her professional career spanned over 30 years.

The pride, joy and love of Nancy's life was her smart and beautiful daughter Laura. They lived, worked and played as a team. Nancy's "happy place" was the family cottage at Lake Torment, where she lovingly tended a large vegetable garden. Many fun adventures were had at the cottage with family and friends. She enjoyed swimming, hikes with her dog and being in nature. Her last canoe ride at the cottage was October 27th.

Her loyal friends since childhood were very important to her. She continued to form more friendships throughout life including her dog walking companions, her fellow employees and Laura's fantastic former caregivers. The family would like to acknowledge the support that these people have provided and a special thanks to her "other brother" for the yard maintenance during her illness.

Nancy lived her life to its conclusion with grace, dignity and courage. Her positive spirit kept her moving forward allowing cherished memories to be made for all who loved her. During her illness she received excellent care from her medical team. We will miss Nancy beyond what words can express.

A celebration of Nancy's life will be held on Monday, December 2nd, at 1 p.m. in Rockingham United Church, 12 Flamingo Drive, Halifax with Reverend Sarah Reaburn officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Donations in memory of Nancy can be made to the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation - Molly Appeal or a charity of your choice.

Nancy and I met through our children, but we bonded over our battles with cancer. I am so very sad to hear that she is gone, and will miss sharing with her the ups and downs of our health. She was always so positive and supportive. Much love and deepest sympathy to Laura from Kate, Logan and the rest of our family.

I meet Nancy at Maritime Life and we both went on to CGI together. She was a lovely person, always had a smile no matter what. Her greatest joy was Laura. So sorry to hear of her passing but she will be remembered by all who knew her.

Nancy was most certainly an incredibly positive, and strong woman that lived every day to the fullest. She is irreplaceable and treasured in our hearts forever. To say she will be missed does not do justice for what is felt, no amount of tears can express the pain of such loss. Thank you for the honour of sharing her with you.

Laura, I was so very sorry to read of your mother's death. I have very fond memories of talking with her about your academic accomplishments. She was so very proud of you. This is such a difficult time in one's life, but I hope, in time, your wonderful memories of your mother will help to lessen your sadness. Elizabeth Millen

Nancy and I met during our time at Maritime Life and continued to see each other at social events when our pathes in life changed. I will always remember her positive attitude, smile for all and her genuine care for others. Her love for Laura shown brightly with every conversation and she was a true example of the saying " There is no greater love than that of a parent for a child." A special person taken far too soon but I am sure she will live on in Laura. Nancy you will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace my friend and soar with the Angel's.

I met Nancy when she came to Maritime Life for a co-op term from University and then stayed on after graduation. We worked together in the Pension Department, then Retail Systems and later joined up again at CGI. We shared many good memories over the years and kept in touch after life took us on different paths. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her daughter Laura and I know she will remain with us in spirit even as we grieve the the loss of her physical presence. Sending sincere condolences to all the family at this very sad time.

I met Nancy just before she went on leave. Theoretically I was her manager but we never had a chance to develop that relationship. Instead I was honoured to know her as a friend. She had such strength and fight, she wasn't going to let this get her. Laura, it was you that gave her that strength. When we talked, we talked about you. She wanted to be there for you, and she tried.

I had the great pleasure of knowing Nancy during our years together at Maritime Life. Nancy's intelligence, strong work ethic, positive personality and diligence were so admired. As a person, Nancy was outgoing, funny, and I can recall in meetings that her faithful 'Chap Stik' was never far from hand 🙂 We were all thrilled when she became a mom and know that her greatest joy in life was her beloved daughter, Laura. She was taken far, far too soon.
