Ryan Gregory Allan Ross

Passed 09/21/2018

Obituary for Ryan Gregory Allan Ross

Age 32.

With overwhelming sadness we announce that our beloved son Ryan passed away on September 21, 2018 after suffering a massive stroke while in hospital with recent complicated, serious health conditions.

Born in Halifax, Ryan was the son of Greg and Kathryn (Onysko) Ross, and dear brother to Andrew and sister-inlaw, Katherine.
Ryan has, at last, been released from his heavy burdens of chronic illnesses, unrelenting pain, and circumstances beyond his control, although not in the way we advocated and hoped for during his challenging life.
From an early age, Ryan suffered from Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and valvular heart disease, which were complicated later by addiction, and several mental illnesses. Ryan deserved so much more from life than the hand he was dealt.
Despite his tremendous suffering, Ryan had a kind and caring heart, befriended those in need, and loved animals, especially his beloved cats.
Ryan was born in Halifax, NS. He attended Tower Road School, Le Marchant St Thomas School, Cornwallis Jr. High, and Queen Elizabeth High School. He further advanced his education, achieving exceptional knowledge, from continuous self-directed study and life experiences.

Ryan was a creative and gifted artist, chef, cartoonist, writer, historian, critic, humourist and collector. His current hobby researching historic memorabilia brought some joy and focus to his life.
We invite you to a celebration of Ryan’s life at St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax, NS, on Thursday, September 27, 2018.  Funeral Mass will be held at 4 pm, followed by a Visitation and Reception from 5 to 7 pm
The family is sincerely grateful to those who have assisted with Ryan’s health care, especially Dr. Gregory C. Archibald, his primary care physican for over 16 years. Most recently, thank you to the physicians and staff of Dartmouth General Hospital Departments of Emergency, Cardiology, Neurology, Internal Medicine and 4W Nursing unit (Dr. Mercer), as well physicians and staff of QEII Halifax Infirmary Departments of Emergency, Neurology (Dr. Stephen Phillips) and 7W Nursing unit.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ryan’s memory are gratefully directed to: NS Arthritis Society, Laing House, NS Heart and Stroke Foundation, Halifax Cat Rescue Society or charity of your choice.

Dear Kathryn, Greg and Andrew, I was saddened to learn of Ryan’s death. I am so sorry for your loss. I know you and Greg were wonderful parents to Ryan and I hope this gives you some comfort. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Sincerely, Doreen Mullane

It is impossible to know the suffering that Ryan endured. I t is impossible to comprehend the calls of duty, of love, and the anguish of the inability to 'make it all better.' It is also impossible for most to empathize fully, except in some small way, those who may have lost a child at an early stage of life. We hope that there may be some small comfort in the number of people who reflect on your family and grieve with you. As well, the priest's comments complete with realism, condolence and hope. Since many probably did not know of Ryan's talent, perhaps a website might be possible as a commemorative memorial to his various artistic abilities... Eric & Jean Llewellyn

Dear Kathryn, it was with a profound sense of loss that I read about Ryan's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and all of your family. "May the Lord bless you and keep you"

For all the difficult times Ryan had, I never once saw him take it out on others. I never once heard him complain, or speak ill of anyone. He was raised well and was always respectful, kind, and even downright hilarious. May he remind us to cherish the precious time we have. His life will ripple on for a long time to come.

Dear Kathryn, Greg and Andrew, Can’t hold back my tears as I write this. Losing two siblings recently hurt so much. Can’t take myself to losing my son. My memory bank holds many wonderful memories of teaching Ryan in grade 5 and 6. I know that even then he was suffering with his arthritis. I can see his sweet smile and disposition still. May you dwell in the Spirit. May you be healed. May you find peace in wonderful memories. Marilyn

Kathryn & Greg, Saying "my condolences" is too trite; like so many people have mentioned before me, my heart physically breaks for you both. I feel like I came to know your beloved son, even though I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person. I know that Ryan was a thoughtful, kind-hearted, intelligent man, who persevered through so many challenges in his life. What always came across to me was really how fearless and strong he was. That is in no small part because of his two exceptional, beloved parents. What a gift he was to you, and in turn, you to him. My biggest hugs to you and Andrew. Sending so much love. xoxoxoxoxo

Dear Kathryn, Greg, and Andrew, It is with a deep, deep sadness for all of us that we learned this morning of the loss of Ryan. Ryan was such a dear, sweet little boy who lived a challenging life. So many memories, both sad and joyous, of a childhood and young life lived so bravely. In the attic there is still the door of the neighbour 'clubhouse' with the names of childhood members written on it. With deep regret all of us are out of the province this Thursday. Our hearts are breaking for you. Holding all of you close in prayer. Anne, Frank, John and Will

Dear, Kathryn, Greg, Andrew and Katherine, There are no words that I can summon that could express the sadness I feel over the loss of your son. The heartbreak you are all suffering is unimaginable. I know that the strength you will gain from your faith will help. I still see that nine year old face, in my grade four class at LMSTS, in that smiling young man. I know Ryan was suffering even then, and fought so hard against it all, as did you always did, on his behalf. I know in the midst of all this sadness, there will be good memories, too. Hold tight to those...and the eternal love they kindle.

Kathryn and Greg, My heart aches for you on the loss of your dear son Ryan. I remember him best as a precocious, creative and totally engaging preschooler with a great sense of humour. His health challenges from a very early age could not take away his spirit or his beautiful smile. Your love and total devotion to him every day were beyond compare. Ryan will be greatly missed. Love and prayers to you both and to Andrew .
