Obituary For Cathy Margaret Scott

Cathy Margaret Scott, age 68, from Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joan Louise Scott (MacLeod) and Gerald Charles William Scott.

Cathy first started her career in the military and was in the first group of women to ever be accepted into the Engineering Branch of the army for training as a draftsman. Later in her career she worked for many years as a building inspector for the Municipality of East Hants.

Cathy was a meticulous, inventive and avid quilter and over her lifetime belonged to many quilting and sewing organizations. Cathy quilted with the Maritime Modern Quilt Guild, the Mayflower Quilting Guild and the Quilts of Valor. Cathy donated her time and effort to make quilts and pillowcases for shelters both in Halifax and in Sydney.

Cathy was pleased to be a member of the East Hants Community Corale and participated in a performance of Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall. Cathy loved to sing.

Cathy was a wonderful loving and giving wife, mother and sister, and she loved her cats immensely. Cathy made many enduring friendships, and I know she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She had a wicked sense of humour and kept a smile on everyone's face with her colourful phrases. The dimple in her cheek and the twinkle in her eyes are what her friends will remember the most.

Cathy is survived by her beloved husband Joe. She was the loving mother to her two children: Kersten Nitsche (Marc Witolla) and their children Wren and Gale; and Aislinn Nitsche (James Doyle) and her children Gabriel, Nathanial and Clara. Cathy is also survived by her 3 sisters, Paula McDonell (Clyde), Phyllis Rhyno (Al) and Wendy Scott.

Cathy's family will be having a private graveside ceremony in South Bar at a future date.

Any donations in her memory can be made to the SPCA or to Hope for Wildlife.

Dear Joe and family Cathy waited on me on my first visit to the Elmsdale quilt store and I left feeling so grateful for her excellent assistance and kind words about my projects, A few months later we found ourselves working together for 7 years at Sew With Vision . I loved how she could break out into a song so many times each day and her funny stories would keep us entertained! Cathy loved her family dearly. My heart goes out Joe and her family.

Dear Joe and family, I came to know Cathy when she worked at Sew with Vision. We clicked immediately and shared a sometimes naught sense of humour. We tried hard to outdo each other in making the other one laugh. As described she had a wonderful twinkle in her eyes and a joy for life. I am so grateful for the snip-its of life we shared. I am sad but still smiling as I think of her. Rest in peace my friend.
