Obituary For Darrell Joseph Keddy (Hanans)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear brother Darrell Joseph Keddy (Hanans) on January 24, 2024, at the age of 70.

Born in Halifax, he was employed with the Halifax Dockyard for many years. Darrell was very athletic playing many sports, his favorite was playing soccer with the Halifax King of Donair senior men's soccer team. He had a great sense of humor and was very caring and kind and enjoyed life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Darrell will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Sarah Rivera (Michael Ballam), grandchildren Elijiah and Sarinne, son Joshua Jeffery Rivera (Candace Beers) grandchildren, Olivia and Ashton. Siblings Gwendolyn Richardson, Wanda (Rick) Neave and special niece Suzette.

He was predeceased by his mother Effie (Langille) Hanans, brothers George, Allan, Robert and David Hanans, sisters Alvinia Ryan, Lorette Hemlow, Marjorie Gallant, Helena Connors, Linda Basher and Florence Hanans.

Darrell’s family would like to thank the staff at Northwood (7th floor), nurses Nancy, Laurie, Rolanda and Dr. C Nowlan for their care and compassion in his last days.

Cremation has taken place, burial will be at a later date.

    Darrell and I were close friends as boys.We both lived in the same neighbourhood,and went to the same school.We played on the same King of Donair team, and for me he was one of the best goal keepers this province has had.Gary Carter ,Darrell and I travelled different paths as we got older..but I knew his heart..there was none better ...Godspeed my friend Rest in peace.

    I remember Darrell from my youth at Saint Mary's Boys School. When I was in grade 5, he would have been in grade 9. So, he would have been what we younger kids refered to as one of the "big boys". Miss Burns used to tell the big boys to look out for us. And they (he) did! I have not seen or thought about Darrell since those early school days but I distinctly remember his face, his smile, and his huge loud laugh. I offer you, his family and friends, my sincere condolences.

    Darrell was one of the best and toughest keepers I ever played with. A great person who will be dearly remembered and missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. RIP.

    I knew Darrell from my teen years hanging out at St. Mary's Basilica in the South end. A great guy, and always genuine. Heck of a soccer goalie too. My condolences to his family and friends.....

    I've known Darrell most of my life and considerd him one of my best friends when we were younger. My condolences to his family. RIP brother until we meet again

    Darrell was a fabulous keeper for the King of Donair soccer club. He was tough and courageous when he played. Darrell was my friend and will be missed! John Evans
