Obituary For Edward William Gannon

Gannon, Edward William, age 82, of Marriotts Cove, NS, born in Halifax, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday, February 17, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Viola Gannon.

Edward worked as a union carpenter (Local 83) for the majority of his life. During his later years he enjoyed working at Granite Springs Golf Club and South Shore Marine where he made lasting friendships with both colleagues and customers. Ed’s life was filled with love and caring for everyone he met and knew, especially his two youngest grandchildren, Ella and Finn, who brought him so much love and joy. Ed loved to cook Italian or Chinese (thanks Kenny Sing). Many of us have great memories of the meals he prepared. Gardening was another pleasure he enjoyed.

Survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Marion (Young), daughter, Jane, sons, Shawn (Vicky), Troy, grandchildren, Justin, Myles, Catherine, Roland, Leyland, Jaimee, Carlee, Ella, and Finn, great-grandchildren, William and Ellie, his siblings, Eleanor (Bruce), John, Frank (Jean), Jim (Cathy), Ricky (Suzanne), sister-in-law, Marie. He is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Predeceased by son, Frank, daughter, Caroline, sisters, Patricia, Frances (Barry), brother, Kenny, sister-in-law, Louise.

Cremation has taken place and burial will be at St Augustines Church, Chester, NS. There will be a celebration of life to be held later. In lieu of flowers please donate to a charity of your choice or do a kind deed for someone as you see needed. Thanks to everyone who has helped Ed along his path of transition to be reunited with family who have gone before him.

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me for now I’m free,

I’m following the path God laid for me,

I took his hand when I heard his call,

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,

To laugh, to love, to work, to play,

Tasks left undone must stay that way.

I’ve found that peace at the end of the day.

If my parting has left a void

Then fill it with remembered joy,

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss;

Ah, yes, these things too I will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My Life’s been full. I savoured much:

Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief,

Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your heart and share with me.

God wanted me now. He set me free.

We are so sorry to hear of Ed's passing. Bill and I have Ed and Clayton to thank for finishing our house for us when the original contractor walked off the job and left us in the lurch back in 1983. AND the house is still standing and doesn't leak! They did a great job. Sincere condolences to all the family🙏

Marion , my sincere condolences to you and your family on the passing of Ed. I didn't know him but any time he was in the yard working he always looked up with a smile and a wave. I think your poem probably captured his character. May he rest in peace and his memory be a blessing Joyce Beaton

Oh, my. A world without Ed is not what I wanted to read about just now. I was thinking about him recently and recalling the time he worked on a house across the street from mine in Downtown Halifax. It was then that he met my husband, Peter Greer. Shortly after becoming good friends, Ed became one of Peter's closest friends at Local 83. He always had a smile. He always asked about our children. He was the first to volunteer for Union social events. Flipping burgers at picnics, and ripping up the floor at dances. He was there when you least expected him to be there. A great fellow who will be missed - Marion, be gentle with yourself as you move through this loss. You know where I am.

Our condolences to you and the family Marion. Always remembered as 'Uncle Ed' (since making and delivering a sandbox for our kids within weeks of us moving in) he was a wonderful neighbour and friend, always so kind and helpful, and a funny story to tell. RIP dear Ed. Fiona, Ed, Rachel & Lockie.

Marion and family, My condolence to everyone. I had the privilege of working with Ed at Granite Springs. There was not a day that we didn't share a good laugh or many. Sending our condolences to Marion and all Eddie's loved ones. We knew Eddie from our social activities at the Mess and always enjoyed his stories and talking about family. Tony especially enjoyed the fact that they both thought there was nothing better than tomato bread (Pan con Tomate) and both thought it was a meal by itself. Thinking about all the family at this difficult time.

My condolences to Jane and your family. I have very fond memories of Ed as I grew up being very close friends with Caroline. He was an amazing dad & had a wonderful sense of humour...just don't ask him to pass the buns if you didn't want to find his dentures sandwiched between. 🤣❤
