Obituary For Merrill Conrad Blagdon

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Captain Merrill Conrad Blagdon, born to the late Conrad and Sarah Blagdon (Miles) in the coastal town of Boxey, Newfoundland.

Captain Blagdon's earliest memories were formed inshore fishing at the tender age of 8, an experience that ignited his lifelong passion for the maritime world. It was during those formative years that he discovered his calling, leaving no doubt in his mind about what he wanted to do with his life.

The pinnacle of his career came as the esteemed Captain of the fisheries patrol vessel Cygnus. Leading with unwavering dedication, Captain Blagdon navigated the seas, ensuring the safety and prosperity of those entrusted to his command.

Merrill carried forward a family legacy shaped by the sea. His nautical expertise and leadership were exemplary, leaving an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of sailing alongside him. His love for the ocean was matched only by his love for his family.

Beyond the waves, Merrill (aka Poppy, Grampy or Curly) was a loving family member and cherished friend. He also loved spending time with his special friend, Leah.

Merrill set sail on his final journey on January 23, 2024. A true mariner at heart, he dedicated his life to the sea with unwavering passion and courage.

Survived by his son Wayne, daughter Michelle (Craig), son Sean (Alyssa), grandchildren Christine (Troy), Erik (Michelle), Sawyer, Daisy, and great-grandchildren Ellie and Emmett , Merrill leaves behind a family enriched by his love and guidance. He is also survived by his sister Irene Cluett and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his stepfather Charles Marsh, sister Barbara Hebert, and sister Jane Green.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no memorial service. Cremation has taken place. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in his honour.

Sincerest condolences. When we moved to WoodburyVilla seven years ago My husband came in and said he had just met a man who sailed with his father aboard the "Cyrus Field". What a small world. Curly always had a joke for us no matter where you met him. At coffee or in the elevator. He would have us laughing even before the punch line sometimes because he was laughing so hard. I'll miss that smile, RIP my friend.

Curly and I spent many hours together over the past 26 months. He was a friend I could count on! He was kind! He was generous! He was a man of great integrity! He beat me at Crib! He chided me for my forgetfulness! He was a true Newfoundlander as am I. He loved listening to "Jiggs and Reels", a Sunday morning radio program out of OZFM St. John's and when he was able we often shuffled around the kitchen floor as the music played! I will miss my friend!

For the past few years, Merrill and I enjoyed Saturday morning coffee and stories, about growing up together in our small Newfoundland village of Boxey. One day, during our childhood - while we were out on a dory - we got caught in a windstorm and the people of the village thought we were goners. Our uncle yelled out 'Let go of the sail' and we did let go, which saved our lives. Starting out in Halifax, we lived in the same house. Our paper routes brought us together again and we touched base over the years. Long may your big job draw in your new adventure. Cousin Fred Miles
