Obituary For Michael Stephen Buckley

The family of Michael Stephen Buckley of Herman’s Island is saddened to announce his passing on July 29th 2023, at the age of 61. Michael was born in Halifax, and he was the son of the late Jean (Kelly) and Jack Buckley. He attended high school at Rothesay Collegiate and University at St. Mary’s where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce. Michael began his career as a manufactures agent in the wall covering industry and he was often referred as the “King of Wallpaper” in Atlantic Canada. He then pivoted his career to the windows and doors sector. In 2012 he moved to Cabot Shipping Supplies as a storage specialist where he formed many meaningful friendships and close business relationships. He was an avid sailor from a very young age and participated and won many competitive sailing races. After many years Michael chose motorboating and golfing in place of rigging and sails, and he was a member of both the Lunenburg Yacht Club and the Bluenose Golf Club. He enjoyed spending his vacations in St. Petersburg Florida where, with his wife he recently purchased a home for the family. He was able to spend three months this past winter with his family and especially appreciated the time with his beloved granddaughter. Michael was often referred by his friends as the life of the party and everyone who knew him loved spending time with him. He will be sorely missed at all of his family gatherings and friends’ parties, where he was witty and always able to make people laugh and enjoy themselves to the fullest. Michael will be lovingly remembered by wife of 36 years, Karen Gordon; daughter Allyson (Bruce Cameron), and son J. Connor (Rossella Calvaruso) along with grandchildren Makenzie and second granddaughter on the way. He will be dearly missed by his brother Jimmy and sister Peggy and many friends. Michael was also predeceased by his brother Billy. A celebration of life will take place at the Lunenburg Yacht Club on Tuesday August 8th at 1 pm. A recording will be available at donaldkwalker.ca following the celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Michael S. Buckley Foundation to help underprivileged children to join the sport of sailing

I worked with Mike for 5 years and, although it has been almost as long since we worked together, I have fond memories from our time working together. He was always up for one of our treat runs and would typically ask us impatiently several times until the treats arrived. This would typically result in us all on the front desk going back and forth with him saying "why don't you go get them yourself!" And often he would, showing up in 30 minutes later with a bag of ice cream bars or others to share with us all! My sincerest condolences to his loved ones, especially the Karen, his children and his grandchildren. Aislinn Scott

Mike's sense of humor and quick wit were second to none. Laura and I really got to know Mike and Karen over the last decade and really wish it had been much longer. Mike's casual hospitality and sense of fun made anytime spent with him a memorable event , whether it was on their boat or at their home and especially enjoyed when Laura would let me have a sleep over at Mike and Karen's . Such laughs. A great friend, father, husband, and grandfather who will be forever missed.

Mike was the rep I most liked to see come into the store,(Acadia and Quigleys on Quipool Road and Colorworks onStrawberry Hill, Halifax) even when the wallpaper industry tanked, we tried to keep it alive and he was so positive,I believe he had something to do with the resurgence! Condolences and fond memories. Meredyth Mitchell-Rochman

My heart is heavy with sadness after learning another of my childhood buddies has passed to the next realm. Many adventures sailing with Mike aboard "Kittiwake"are among the fondest memories of my youth. Michael's hilarious exuberance was always kept in check by the "warden" (Karen) - and he wouldn't have had it any other way. My condolences to you Karen, Capt. Jimmy and Peggy.

I'm sorry for your loss Karen. Mike was a great guy to work with. Loved his sense of humor. I did his orders for him at Cabot and we always had a little grumble about it and we would tell each other to focus and have a laugh about it. I'm adding a burgundy candle because he found me a Rousseau burgundy football helmet for my retirement. Rest in peace Mike. We will miss you.

I remember one night he called me from a random number pretending to be some super yacht owner looking for new sails. Had me going for like over 10 minutes tell me he wanted to fly me to Europe blah blah blah. I finally could hear my father laughing in the back ground and figured it out. Mike brought smiles and laughs to everyone he surrounded. He will be missed and will be forever considered a legend of LYC
