Obituary For Bertrand Vogel

VOGEL, Bertrand (Bert), age 69, of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at the

QEII Health Sciences Centre on January 30, 2026, following a brief illness.

Bert was born in Metz, France, and from the very beginning lived life with curiosity, determination, and an open heart. He had a deep love of learning and an eagerness to understand how things worked—whether it was computers, motorcycles, or the world itself. He joined the French Navy, where he travelled to Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. Those early adventures ignited a lifelong passion for travel. After a brief term in the Navy he returned to France and opened his own motorcycle shop. which he ran successfully for several years. Still being in his early 20’s he sold his shop and decided to spend several months exploring Africa with friends, experiencing different cultures and cuisines that he spoke about fondly for years.

In 1980, Bert immigrated to Canada to join his twin brother, Laurent, in Laval, Quebec. It was there that he met Penny Nielsen, the love of his life and wife. Together they eventually made their home in Nova Scotia, a place Bert grew to love deeply. Bert was a man of deep devotion. He cared for Penny, his wife of 35 years, until she passed from Alzheimer’s in 2022. During her illness he took great care of her, keeping her at home until it was no longer possible. When she went into a nursing home, he visited daily for two years until her passing. The staff knew him well and appreciated his help and kindness. Approximately two years after Penny’s passing he was fortunate enough to be introduced to Joanne Beauchamp. They came into each other’s lives at a perfect time, hitting it off immediately and remaining together until his final days. He took great care of Joanne, and when the time came, she remained by his side throughout his illness. How lucky he was to have found love twice in a life ime.

Bert could master anything he set his mind to. He was a meticulous learner and a handyman extraordinaire, often helping neighbours and friends and never once refusing a request. If Bert took on a project, it would be done perfectly. He completely redesigned and renovated the interior of his home on McCarthy Street on his own. He once dismantled his BMW motorcycle to create a detailed electrical blueprint so precise that BMW later requested his authorization to include it in their official manual. His love of motorcycles also connected him to people around the world through a BMW Bike Owners website which he developed and managed, and where he generously shared his knowledge.

Professionally, Bert worked in hydraulics and information technology and spent more than 20 years as an IT Supervisor with the Halifax Regional Center for Education, retiring in 2016. If there was something he didn’t know, he would quietly research, study, and master it—then help everyone else do the same.

Bert was a true innovator in technology with an extraordinary depth of knowledge, yet he wore his brilliance lightly. He always had an answer, but even more importantly, he always had the patience to help others find it too. His work ethic was unmatched, but it was his kindness and generosity that truly set him apart.

Bert was driven by a desire to make things better and more efficient—not for recognition, but simply because he believed in doing things well. His co-workers shared that he could spend hours perfecting a script while others joked, “Bert, it’s faster to do it manually.” He’d smile and reply, “Yes—but next time it will take you half the time it did today.” He was always right, and before long, we were all asking for his scripts. He had a rare gift for explaining complex ideas in a way people could understand—once you got past his French accent, of course.

Bert’s sense of humor was ever-present, and you could always count on him for a daily chuckle. His cheerful, kind, and caring nature earned him a wide circle of friends who admired and loved him deeply. He made people feel supported, capable, and seen. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled.

Bert is survived by his brothers Laurent of Laval, Quebec, Brice (Florence) of Metz, France; his loving partner Joanne Beauchamp, brothers-in-law Christopher and Peter; sisters-in-law Kathy Pipe, Karen Nielsen, and Sandy Nielsen; niece Erika Pipe; nephews Julien and Martin; great-niece and great-nephew Astrid and Soren Guilbert. He was predeceased by his parents, René and Françoise Vogel, his wife, Penny Nielsen and brothers-in-law Jon Coates, Rob Pipe and Jan Nielsen.

At Bert’s request, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.

I am deeply saddened that the world no longer has Bert to call its own. A true gentleman with sage advice for all and never too much trouble for anything requested. We never met physically but he was a brother to us all. I miss him as he joins our other brothers lost these recent years. I hope there are motorcycles where you are now my friend. 🏍️

Sorry to hear about Bertrand, I worked with Bert at the School Board for 20 years. He was a good friend and a very interesting character. I never did see Bert in a bad mood and he was always joking around. However, he took his job very seriously and was an excellent worker. Condolences to you Laurent and all of your family.

I had the honour of working alongside Bert for around 20 years. He was Smart, Kind and Funny. Although he retired, I had often thought of Bert when I would encounter a difficult Tech issue since he was one of the few I could go to for answers or to bounce ideas off. He will be Deeply missed. Peter

My uncle, friend, tutor, and beloved compatriot in silly things. I will of course miss you, you know that. But the thousands upon thousands of laughs, tears, and a certain few "real" moments, will last beyond a lifetime. Je t'aime, tu me manqueras toujours. Mais toujours avec de la gratitude et le soleil. Mon oncle chéri.

Bert was truly one of a kind—full of personality, kindness, and heart. I had the privilege of knowing and working with Bert for 20 years, and he was an absolute star of a guy. Always positive, always a pleasure to be around. We spent many days talking about life and where it might take us after retirement, and he would always say, "Well Mary, it's what you make it." I used to get such a kick out of him—he'd get frustrated over something at work, and five minutes later he'd smile and say, "It's okay, it's okay. We'll figure it out. There's always a way." That was Bert. Unstoppable. I am so grateful to have known him, and I will never forget him. He will always be our Bert.

Bert was the 'father' of the BMW K forum and raised a community in his own image: knowledgeable and respectful with help and humour always on tap. Great loss.

  • 02/04/2026

Bert was the finest IT person during my time with the former Halifax Regional School Board. He always took the time to listen, to help and to brighten the day with his amazing sense of humour. May he rest in peace. Frances Murdock.

So sad to hear of Bertrand's illness and passing. He was an absolute colossus amongst the world of BMW K series motorcycles. The forum he started brought over 3500 enthusiasts together in a place of camaraderie, sharing and respect. His impact is both global and immense. Albeit by phone or video link we had many great conversations about diverse subjects over a late night chat and a whiskey. I shall miss those. My sincere condolences to his family and close friends. Will Crean, Ireland.

Saddened to hear of a good friend taken too soon. We rode together when I lived in NS and when I suggested a BMW Owners of Nova Scotia website it was a one meeting task with Bert doing the heavy lifting. Ride on my friend!

  • 02/04/2026

My sincere condolences to all of Bert's family and friends. I knew Bert for more than 20 years and worked with him for 15. I was so happy to see him retire and eventually enjoy his retirement to the fullest. He was smart, funny, and so outgoing. Life is never long enough, especially for the ones that are left behind. I will think of him often, share his stories and never forget him. Even after all these years, I will always think of Bert when I go to a Tim Hortons and order a tea and cheese croissant. When we worked together, he would usually have one waiting for me if he arrived there first. Bert was one of a kind.... rest in peace buddy.

Joanne introduced Bert to John and I two years ago and we hit It off immediately. As mentioned we found Bert knowable kind and witty. We looked forward to socializing with him often. We are sorry the time was short. We know Joanne and Bert gave each other much love and support, during their times of need and we are grateful our kind friend Joanne had Bert in her life.

Bert was always in it for a good laugh. It don't matter the kind of day your were having, he could always bring out a smile. From working with him in the schools to riding the bikes on the annual Cape Breton highlands trails, thanks for the many happy memories Bert.

  • 02/03/2026

Bert was a great friend to all who knew him, and kept everyone laughing when we were on any of our motorcycling adventures. He was always there and willing to help in any way he could. I will miss you my friend. ❤ Scott Giffin

Bert, you will always remain a very special, caring brother-in-law. You were taken far too soon and I'm sure you had so many things left to do and more places to see. You have left us in shock but will remain in our thoughts and hearts on both sides of the ocean.

  • 02/02/2026

Bert was the best neighbour anyone could ever hope to have. We lived on the same street for over 30 years. He was always there to lend a hand, share a meal, lend an ear or dry a tear. Words cannot explain how much he will be missed. Selfishly, I wish we had more time to say goodbye but I can take comfort that you didn't have to suffer with a long illness. Rest in peace my friend. Say hello to those we love on the other side. Sandy Myers
