Obituary For Clayton "Clay" Legge

Legge, Clayton (Clay) 1939-2022

Clay Legge, 83, of Halifax passed away peacefully on September 3rd, 2022 at Hospice Halifax with his family by his side.

He was born in Heart’s Delight, NL son of the late Edmund and Gertrude (Fost) Legge.

He is survived and dearly missed by his wife Ruth (Powell) Legge of Halifax; his daughters, Jayne Johnson (Doug) of Hammonds Plains, and Carol Nemeth(George) of Bass River, N.B; the absolute joys of his life, granddaughters, Michelle and Sammy Johnson (Tim Naerebout) of Hammonds Plains; sister Janet (Robert) Crocker of Bedford; brother Dave (Pauline) Legge of NL; along with several nieces and nephews.

Clay worked for The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) for over 40 years and was admired and well respected by both clients and colleagues alike. He and Ruth made many lifelong friends over the span of his career, all of whom will miss his twinkling blue eyes and devilish teasing nature. He was a wonderful friend and the quintessential old school banker.

Clay was happiest puttering around in his workshop and loved woodworking. He had an amazing talent of building model ships, true treasures for those lucky enough to own one. Most of all, Clay loved his family and was so very proud of the accomplishments of his two beautiful granddaughters. He was the best husband, Daddio and Grampie to his girls, and we will treasure his memory forever.

Honouring Clay’s own wishes, the family will be having a private graveside service in Sussex, N.B.

For those who wish, donations in Clay’s memory to Hospice Halifax would be greatly appreciated by the family

Dave, Pauline and Clay's family: I am saddened indeed to learn of Clay's passing. Although we didn't directly work together we did meet from time to time at conferences and RBC gatherings and of course, I knew his connection to Dave as well as his Trinity Bay upbringing. Over the years I heard nothing but the highest regard and compliments about Clay, a testament to his professionalism. Somewhere in my RBC mementos I have a photo of Clay, Eileen Baird and myself at one of the bank's gatherings from a number of years ago. Always remember his big, friendly smile. Sending you my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mrs. Legge I was fortunate to know Clay while he was in Kentville with the RBC. He was always a pleasure to deal with. I am also lucky to have a constant reminder of him as I am the proud owner of the first canoe that Clay made in his workshop at home in Coldbrook and it looks as good now as it did when it was just finished. So very sorry for the loss you all carry for a husband, dad, a granddad, and brother - and more hats I'm sure. I worked with Clay in the early 90s as part of his Business Banking Team in Kentville. As a Fellow Newfoundlander, I was asked to "do something funny" at his retirement party. I knew Clay had been delivered at home by a midwife so entered the room wearing a nurse's cap, a plaid Cleese jacket and a pair of rubber boots. I was carrying a huge stainless steel bowl, a towel and some old contraption I found at home. I can't remember what I said that night, but do remember the smile on Clay's face and the laughter of the dinner guests. It was a privilege to be part of that evening for a quiet, gentle and kind man. You will be mightily missed Clayton Legge. RIP.

Carol, Jayne , Ruth , Michelle and Samantha, we want you to know that we are thinking of you all today and in the days ahead as you journey through these sad times. We met Clay and Ruth many years ago while vacationing with Ruth and Reg. We felt as if we had known them for ever. We have many wonderful memories of our times together playing cards, sharing meals , shopping and laughing together. Clayton was such a talented artist, humble kind man , devoted husband and caring Dad and Grampie! He will be missed by many . We hope that your wonderful memories will help to sustain you at this difficult time. Sending caring warm thoughts, Barbara and Bob Parsons
