Obituary For Marilyn Louise Daniels

The world has lost a beautiful gentle soul with the death of our mother, Marilyn Louise (Bateman) Daniels. She was born at the Grace Maternity Hospital on April 20,1930 and passed away on January 8th, 2023. She was the eldest child of Allan and Winnifred (Greenough) Bateman. Her home in Port Wallis was a very special place to her. Mom's entire childhood was spent with her aunts, uncles and cousins who lived nearby. Swimming at 'The Cut' was a highlight of each summer.

Her primary to grade eight years were spent at the two-room school in her community. Grades nine to eleven were completed at Hawthorne School in Dartmouth. When she was offered the opportunity to work as a dental assistant for Dr.R. Cameron, she accepted it.

At the age of 17, Mom won the title of Miss Port Wallis. Following that, she became the first runner-up in the Miss Dartmouth contest. Her beauty shone both inside and out.

While attending a dance one night in 1949, Mom met our handsome, blue-eyed Dad, Ross Daniels. At that time he was driving the Bell bus from Port Wallis to Dartmouth, on which Mom travelled. A love began there that lasted 73 years.

Over the next six years she became a mother to five girls; Bonnie, Pam, Christine, Heather and Shelly. She was also a second mother to her daughter-of-the-heart, Sandra Misener White. Obviously, the next number of years were very busy ones, raising her family in Graham's Grove, Port Wallis, and then moving to Sunnylea Road, Wellington, where She and Dad bought their first home.

Above all, Mom was a kind and patient wife and mother. She loved babies and was happiest when she was holding a baby in her arms, whether it was her own children, grandchildren, great grandchildren or someone else's baby. A couple of weeks ago, Mom commented that she got everything she wanted in life. When asked what that was, she replied, “ A family.” That was our mother.

Mom provided a safe loving home for our family and anyone else who entered it. All were welcomed and fed. The cookie jar, her son-in-law Fred bought her, was never empty! Friends and boy friends knew where to go to get homemade sugar doughnuts, cakes, pies and cookies. A little went a long way. When we were young, home parties with our parents' friends and family were frequent. A guitar might appear and Mom always enjoyed singing with her siblings. 'Sentimental Journey' was a favourite. She and Dad also loved to do the two-step polka, enjoying many Saturday night dances in Nine Mile River.

Her love of singing was apparent when she joined the choir at the St. Thomas Anglican Church in Fall River, along with her sister, Shirley, and her brother, Tom. She was also involved in the Alter Guild and made many special friends at the church.

Mom loved flowers and took great pride in her gardens. Animals were also very important to her. There was always a cat, dog or both in our home. The birds and squirrels in the neighbourhood always had treats. After suffering a stroke five years ago, which left her immobile, She and Dad would sit on the veranda feeding the squirrels and chipmunks which climbed onto their laps and took peanuts from their hands. She had names and love for them all.

Mom always had great compassion for others. She was often seen quietly slipping 'a few dollars' into the hand of someone she thought might need it.

After her family grew up, Mom returned to working outside the home at various jobs. These included Havill Brothers, Bedford, and as a librarian at Bedford Institute of Oceanography, from which she retired in 1990. BIO was a great match for her because she loved books and learning new things. She made friends wherever she went. Mom and Dad leave behind five grieving daughters; Bonnie Currie (Reg), Pam Woodill (Fred), Christine Daniels, Heather Fisher (Carson) and Shelly Fifield (Mike).”

Mom came from a very close-knit family. She is survived by her three siblings; her beloved sister, Shirley McNaughton, and brothers, Tom Bateman (Jewell) and John Bateman (Hans Kahlert). Also survived by sisters-in-law Ruth Weir (Don), Sharon McPhee (Lealon) and special brother-in-law Lee McCulloch (Queenie).

She was predeceased by her parents, Allan and Winnie Bateman, as well as her brothers-in-law Jim McNaughton and Phil Daniels.

Mom always said, above all, her greatest sense of pride and joy came from her 11 grandchildren and her 20 great-grandchildren. Mom and Dad's presence on Sunnylea Road will be missed by them all. During her final days Mom was never alone. The family members she so loved were constantly at her side.

Thank you, Mom, for the many valuable lessons you taught us; kindness, compassion and non-judgement.

My sincere condolences to all my cousins; Shirley, Tom, John, Bonnie, Pam, Christine, Heather and Shelly and their families. I loved my cousin Marilyn. I remember when I was very young thinking to myself how pretty Marilyn and her sister Shirley were. I loved going to Marilyn and Ross's home when I came back to Nova Scotia to visit family. There was always a great meal and goodies for these visits. My brothers and I were always so warmly welcomed. And I loved when she told me stories about when I was very young and she would take me on the bus and tell people I was her daughter. Marilyn was so full of love for others. I shall miss her very much. I imagine she is in heaven having a great visit with my Mum and Dad, and the rest of the family.

Hello, Sorry to learn of Marilyn's passing. The Ross and Marilyn Daniels, the Connors, the Murphys, the Bakers, the Barrows, the Grahams, the Bullocks and the Phil and Joan Daniels were all next door in Graham's Grove. Life in the Grove was special. We grew-up living in the woods by the lake. Swimming, skating, running, laughing, corn boils, blue berry pie, robins and blue jays. Basic values and friendships created. Mum, Agnes Connor, and Marilyn were expectant mothers together. They brought and built our families as pairs; Bonnie and Jane, Pam and Peter, Christine and MaryAnne, Heather and Susan, Shelly...and much later, my brother, Eric. Marilyn and Mum became soul mates and life-long friends. Over the years, regular telephone conversations kept them in-touch. Mum would often speak of her calls with Marilyn.
