Obituary For Blaine Errol Furlong

Blaine Errol Furlong, age 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 21, 2026 at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Halifax, Blaine enjoyed an accomplished 40-year career as a film editor with CBC Television. His talent, creativity, and dedication to his craft earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike.

Blaine was exceptionally artistic and creative. Whether through rug hooking, woodworking, or his remarkable sand stone carvings, he seemed able to create anything he set his mind to. His hands were rarely idle and his imagination knew no limits. In addition to his artistic gifts, Blaine was the ultimate handyman. He could fix almost anything and usually had the exact spare part tucked away somewhere on his desk or in one of his many workstations at home - or at his beloved cottage in Prince Edward Island.

Aside from the deep love he had for his family and grandchildren, Blaine’s happiest moments were spent at the cottage in Prince Edward Island - his “little piece of heaven.” He built the cottage in 1963, and it became a place of comfort, joy, and treasured memories. It was home to Blaine and Wenda, and they spent as much time there as they possibly could. Nothing brought them greater happiness than welcoming their children and grandchildren for visits filled with laughter, love, and time together.

Blaine is survived by his loving wife, Wenda; his daughter, Michelle (Popp) Esprit; his stepson, Geoff (Laurie) Appleby; and his stepdaughter, Suzanne (Andrew) Johnson. He will be lovingly remembered by his cherished grandchildren: Amber Esprit; Colin and Violet Appleby; and Gavin and Ethan Johnson.

Donations in Blaine’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.
