Obituary For Dr. Ethel E Pereira

Dr. Ethel E Pereira, 96, of Halifax, passed away peacefully at Drummond Hall Parkland Clayton Park, in Halifax Nova Scotia, on September 3, 2023.

Ethel was born in Belgaum, and grew up in Secunderabad, India. She was preceded in death by her parents Cajetan Francis Pereira and Helen Pereira of Secunderabad, sisters Lily Pereira and Vilma Pereira of Montreal, brother Leslie Pereira (Yvette Bacquer) of Chateauguay, brother Cyril Pereira (Marilyn) of Secunderabad, and half-brother Edwin Pereira (Bridget).

Ethel was a wonderful woman, physician, and friend, with impeccable values. She was best known for her positive attitude, resilience, sense of humor, wisdom, and humble devotion to her Roman Catholic faith and to the many patients she served throughout her medical career. She loved nothing more than practicing medicine, helping women and delivering babies. Always saying “what can I do to help?” and being of service to others.

She was a graduate of Christian Medical College Vellore, affiliated with Madras University in India. She then moved on to complete her Internship and Residency in England. She was a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in England where she was elevated to Fellowship. She became a Fellow of The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

When Ethel first came to Canada, on the way to Vancouver from the UK, she attended a mass at the Queen Street Halifax Infirmary run by the Sisters of Charity. During that visit, she was offered a staff position, which she accepted. The Sisters of Charity became like a second family to her, and it was Halifax where she was happy to stay and build her medical practice.

In Halifax she was a staff member at the Halifax Infirmary, Victoria General Hospital, Grace Maternity Hospital, IWK Health Centre, and Stadacona Medical Center. She was an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Dalhousie University.

Ethel retired from a fulfilling medical career in 1993. She loved life and continued to live life to the fullest by gardening, spending time with loved ones, enjoying music, and traveling around the world with her dear friend Lucille Fricker.

She will be missed and remembered by all who knew her and loved her.

A special thanks to Dr. Margaret Leighton, Dr. Couture, the wonderful staff and friends at Parkland Clayton Park where Ethel has lived for many years, and to her special friends at Comforting Companions Care Providers.

Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass and short reception will be held at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church (6903 Mumford Road, Halifax) on Tuesday Sept 26, 2023, at 10am, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Ethel.

Dr Pereira delivered five of my six babies. She was unable to deliver one due to a broken arm at the time. She instilled such trust and was so up- to -date in her knowledge and care. I was honoured to have her as my doctor. Rest in peace dear lady. S. Comstock

In 1968, I was born with Rh disease, and if it wasn't for Dr. Pereira, I wouldn't be here today almost 55 years later. She saved my life and I pray that she is blessed with the reward she deserves.

Ethel was a remarkable human being, teacher and clinician. She was a gentle obstetrician and taught me, and many other medical professionals in training that aggressive interventions, including episiotomies, were usually unnecessary. Her gentle example influenced the care of many people, most of whom she never met. I'm grateful to have known Ethel.

Ethel and Lucille were our summer neighbours at Lewis Lake for 15 years. They were wonderful friends and like family to my son and I. I will always treasure the memories of our daily swims together with Betty Smilestone and family. My son grew up with them and they loved him so much. Ethel is the last of that epic circle of friends that I am so grateful to have known. Rest easy old friend. Love always, Donna and David Ward

Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of wonderful thoughts about Ethel. I didn't know her as a doctor but as a kind and loving resident at Parkland. She meant so much to us as staff. I would often hear express her love for us and she would call us "Sweetie" and caringly ask how we were doing. She was the same wonderful person here at Parkland as she was throughout her career in medicine. Thank you, Ethel, for your many kindnesses. We were grateful for the opportunity to be part of your life.

Ethel was an important part of the happy summer vacations at Bob and Betty Smilestone in distant Canada, a neighbor and friend with a deep and genuine smile, with "hot chili for Hezi". Ethel Lucy and Betty swimming breaststroke with pool noodles in Lewis lake, talking and laughing all the way to the rock is remembered with love and a smile that spreads across my face. The "Rock Ethel Home" swimming course continues and will continue for the Smilestone's my children and their children in the years to come. With longing and love Hezi Hacham ❤️🕯️

Ethel was a close friend of my family for more than 50 years. She was an integral part of mine and my sibling's childhood. We shared our summers together on our little piece of paradise at Lewis Lake. My mother and her would swim the lake every day and discuss the goings on of their lives. She was a dear friend. There is not enough pages to share all the wonderful memories I have with Ethel. It was a privilege to have known her. Beth Smilestone.❤️🕯️

I had the privilege of having Dr. Pereira as my OBGYN for many years. She was the most wonderful doctor I ever had and anyone who also had her was blessed. My heart is saddened by her passing and although she hadn't practiced for many years I am sure no one who had her as a doctor will ever forget her for the wonderful and caring woman she was. RIP

A beautiful woman, both inside and out. Dr. Pereira was my doctor during both pregnancies, and until her retirement. No matter how busy she was, she always had time to spend on any concerns her patients might have, and was very motherly in her approach. Her waiting room, with Sister Nancy in charge, was always upbeat and interesting. A visit to Dr. Pereira's office was like a visit with family. ♥️

Dr Pereira was a teacher and a colleague who, in her white rubber boots, just quietly went about getting things done. A life of service is an important Christian value and she served her community well.

Dr Pereira was my ob/gyn and took care of me and delivered my 3 boys...all in their own way difficult pregnancies. She told me on my first visit, " I don't want you to worry any more, I do that for you!" She was a beautiful, spiritual, confident, soothing doctor and if you were in her care, you loved her. I am sad to hear of her passing, but know she is a leading Angel in her Heavenly Home. I will forever remember her kindness and smile; leaning over me hugging me in her fur coat on her way to church but stopped to see me in ICU at 26 weeks gestation, and to tell me she would be right back and her pager was on ... a couple of hours later she emergency delivered my 3rd son, 1.5 lbs (section) ... a miracle worker, 34 years ago ... she hugged me again before she left. She touched so many people ❤️. RIP Dr Pereira
