Obituary For Evelyn Chadwick VanScoyk

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evelyn Chadwick VanScoyk on October 14, 2023, at the QE2 Halifax Infirmary after a devastating fall. Evelyn was born on February 28, 1931, to the late Ruth(Joudrey) and Max Frey in New York, N.Y.

Evelyn’s father passed away when she eight years old and her mother returned with her to Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia where she completed school. At 18, she competed in the Queen of Sea pageant and met her future husband, the late William David “Van” Van Scoyk. Van followed her family to Florida and on December 16, 1949, she married Van and moved with him to his hometown, Peoria, Ill. They welcomed a son, William David in 1950 and returned to Canada in 1960 when Van’s career took him to Toronto. In 1963 they came to Halifax and settled into life in Armdale, N.S.

Evelyn was happy as a stay-at-home mother and enjoyed an active social life in Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Van, who died tragically in 1988. Evelyn remained in the family home in Armdale until March of 2023 when she moved into Bradford Hall at Parkland, Clayton Park.

Evelyn is survived by her son, David (Anne) and her grandson, Nikolas.

Cremation has taken place, and a committal service will take place at a later date. She will be laid to rest with her late mother Ruth and her late husband Van in Mahone Bay.

Special thanks to the nursing staff on 8.1 and the staff of Bradford Hall for their kind care.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of my friend Evelyn. We spent happy times together chatting and laughing at her home prior to her moving to parkland and we would go to the esquire restaurant where she really enjoyed lunch and laughing. Condolences to the family. Louise Caza

I would like to extend my condolence to you and your family David on the passing of your mother. It has been almost 50 years since I had been your neighbor but I still have fond memories of your mother and the good times we had back then. I was lying awake in bed last night thinking about your mom and realizing that she was still in the same family home that I got to know so well when I looked after your pet skunk. I pray that your family will be all reunited one day in heaven. Raymond & Heather Boutilier

Dear David, Anne and Nikolas, We have never met, but my Mother, Melba Mosher, and your mother were good friends many years ago. Melba worked in a jewellery store in Mahone Bay in the 1940's and she boarded with a family in Mahone Bay that she knew who were from Barss Corner in Lunenburg County. Melba was born in Parkdale and later her family moved to New Germany. She married Glenn Sarty in 1947. Melba often spoke of Evelyn and she had photos of the three of them. In a way I almost felt like I knew your mother just from all the stories I heard about her from my Mother. Evelyn was a lovely person and she was also a beautiful young woman - no wonder she was a contestant in the Lunenburg Queen of the Sea Pageant. Even when Melba and Evelyn's lives went in different directions, they still remained in touch with each other for many years so that proves theirs was a strong friendship. I wish I had a few of those old photos to share with you, but so far I have not been able to locate any of them. If I do find any of them I will share them with you on this site. I seem to remember Mother telling me that you were managing a pet store in Burnside Park in Dartmouth many years ago, but maybe I have you confused with someone else. Mom was born March 30, 1929 so she was two years older than your Mother. She lived in her home in Bridgewater until 2014 and then she moved to live with my sister and her husband in Maplewood . In January 2021 Mother began living at Rosedale Home in New Germany where she received excellent care until her death on July 14, 2023. I was a public classroom teacher and most of my teaching career was spent in various schools in Dartmouth. My husband and I have been living in Ottawa since the summer of 2015. We moved here to be supportive to our son, Michael, and his family. I am sorry to learn of your Mother's death. I am sure it has been a great tragedy for you to accept. My sincere hope is that the love and support of your family and friends will be a constant source of encouragement in the coming weeks and months as you learn to live your lives without your mother/ grandmother. With sincere sympathy, Linda (Sarty) Powell
