It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Montford of Lower Sackville. Born in Lakeside Nova Scotia, beloved son of the late Doug and Helen (Day) Montford, Fred fought a courageous journey with dementia and left this world surrounded by those who meant the most to him on June 5th, 2026.

Fred lived a life defined by hard work, humility, and deep devotion to his family. A dedicated and dependable man, he spent 42 years with Ben’s Bakery, where he was respected for his strong work ethic, quiet determination, and reliability. Providing for his family and taking pride in his work were values that remained constant throughout his life.

Fred loved tending to his yard and garden. He took great pride in his home and property, setting a lasting example for his children. He enjoyed nature and took every opportunity to go fishing whenever he could. Fred and Joan especially cherished their times together, enjoying drives to the beach and sitting by the ocean on warm summer days or an evening with friends dancing to their favorite tunes.

Even as dementia gradually took its toll, Fred’s love for the outdoors and for his family never wavered. He could often be found feeding animals behind one of his children’s homes, lending a helping hand with odd jobs, or creating beautiful flower tables to share with family and friends. His eyes and spirit would immediately brighten at the sight of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.

Fred leaves behind a legacy of hard work, quiet strength, and a lifetime of cherished memories shared with those who loved him most.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Joan (Killeen). Together for 66 years, they built a life grounded in love and the simple joys of everyday moments.

He will be deeply missed by his children, daughters Sandy (Danny) Smallwood, Mary Montford, son Geoff (Gerry) Montford. Cherished grandchildren Jessica, Kaitlyn (Joe), Nick (Asrar), Blake, Christopher (Rebeccah), Shelby and great grandchildren Elena and Remi. As well as his sisters, Helen Montford and Debbie Pastorius (Richard), along with many nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his sisters June Boutilier and Shirley Montford.

A funeral Mass and reception will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (former St John Vianney) Sackville Drive on Friday, June 12th at 11:30 AM.

The family would like to thank all their friends and family for their love and support. Also, a heartfelt thanks to the staff of Shannex at Moody Hall for their wonderful care.

Those wishing to honor Fred may make donations in Fred’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
