Obituary For Lawrence Richard Eustace

EUSTACE, Lawrence Richard (Dick) -(Age 72)

It was with heavy hearts that the Eustace family bid Dick a final farewell after a long battle with esophageal cancer. Dick passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, 30 January 2024 at Victoria General Hospital, Halifax NS.

Dick will forever be remembered for his long and distinguished career in the Royal Canadian Navy, which began when he joined the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps in St. John’s NL, at the age of 14. He later transferred to the Naval Reserves, and then continued to pursue his Naval career upon transferring to the Royal Canadian Navy in 1968, wherein he served more than 37 years. Having served in numerous HMC ships and units within Maritime Forces Atlantic in Halifax, NS, Dick was highly regarded for his expertise in seamanship; most notably, as the resident expert in replenishment at sea operations in the Navy’s Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment ships. He retired from the Royal Canadian Navy in August 2006.

Dick’s passion for sports saw him actively participate in a myriad of military sports programs, most notably ice hockey, as well as supporting the Dartmouth Moosehead Mounties, and Senior AA hockey teams in his role as Athletic Trainer. An avid golfer, Dick enjoyed spending time at Hartlen Point Golf Club, both chasing the ball and sprucing up the course.

Dick and Gloria were blessed with an active social calendar that included a wide circle of close friends in the Halifax area, as well as in their beloved Snowbird home in Bradenton, Florida. Those who had the good fortune to have him as a friend will remember his witty sense of humour, his loyalty, and his passion for helping others.

He leaves to mourn: his loving wife, Gloria (nee: Frankton) of 50 years. Sons: Robert (Bobby) (Leanne) of Eastern Passage NS, and James (Jamie) (Alyssa) of Halifax NS. Grandchildren: Steven, Alexander, Abigail, and Jaxon. Great-granddaughter: Ellie. Brothers: Robert (Jenny), Torbay NL; Thomas (Julie), Victoria BC; and Max, St. John’s NL. Sisters: Beverley (Paddy) Phillpott, Kilbride NL; Elizabeth Bragg, Pouch Cove NL; Debbie (Steven) Power, Torbay NL; and Sally (Gerrald) Eustace, Richmond BC. Pre-deceased by his parents Thomas Stanley Eustace and Nora Mary (Noni) Eustace (nee: Mayo).

Dick will be sadly missed by all.

Dick’s celebration of life will be April 6th 2024 at 1PM at the Buffalo Club in Eastern Passage, 625 Cow Bay Road, Cow Bay, N.S.

Our sympathy to Gloria, the boys, and all the family. We will forever miss Dick's quick witted humor and those little "ditties" as he strummed the guitar. Especially at the annual "clean out the fridge" gatherings here in Florida.

Remember "meeting the parents" of the first boyfriend. It was grade 4 for the kids! Sarah would have been around 10 years old and is now almost 45. Things change, circumstances separate people, but friends remember and say how sad we are. Thinking of you, Gloria and the family, from our family. Deb and Rick Dunham

Very Sorry to hear of Dicks battle with Cancer and his subsequent passing. My sincerest condolences to his Family and Friends. Dick and I followed similar careers. We were in Sea Cadets with Terra Nova Corps, St John's. We joined the Naval reserve unit HMCS Cabot, and from there we transitioned into the regular force. We never served in the same ships. Dick was a dedicated and professional seaman well respected by his peers. Dick had a great sense of humor and was always glad to host a gathering with a few playful jokes to acknowledge his shipmates.

Gloria and family, very sorry for your loss. Back in '89/90 as a young naval engineer sent to the R.A.S. Deck of Preserver under Dick's supervision, I was in absolute terror of both the equipment and Dick. He ran the deck like a bulldog. But, when I saw that playful glint in his eyes, and after many hours of mentorship, I learned much about being a good human-being, and a decent sailor, that lasted me a 35-yr career. Sincerest condolences. We have lost one heck of a sailor. Fair winds Dick. Derek Cann

It is with a very heavy heart that I send condolences to Dicks loving family and those all close to him. I had the pleasure of sailing with Dick on the Terra Nova, playing hockey on his teams and having him tend to my injuries, while he was our trainer for the East Coast Naval Gun Run Team. He was a great mentor and always took the time to stop, chat and of course tell a joke. I consider Dick more than just a Boss, I consider him a big brother. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. Gerry Ross

  • 02/04/2024

Gloria and family, so very sorry to hear of Dick's passing. It came as a shock to all of us. Whenever he would come to Newfoundland for a visit he would always drop by for a chat. Needless to say he had a great sense of humour and could tell quite a few stories. When Dick was growing up he spent many summers in Torbay at his grandparent's home and he and my brothers would pal around together and get into the usual kind of mischief. When he spoke about you and the boys you could feel the pride in his voice for all of you. On behalf of my family please accept our sincere condolences and we will keep Dick's memory in our prayers. Judy (Eustace) Dawe and the Eustace Families.
