Obituary For Sylvia Hommy (Chrenek, née Horneland)

On June 20th, 2025, Sylvia Hommy (Chrenek, née Horneland) passed away peacefully at the age of 96.

Sylvia was born on September 16th, 1928, to parents Olan and Hanna Horneland. She attended primary school in Valhalla and La Glace, and high school in Grande Prairie before beginning work at the Royal Bank branch in Sexsmith in 1945. In 1948 she married Bert Chrenek and they moved to the family farm 5 miles east of Sexsmith where she and Bert raised their sons Tom, Greg, Ron, Dennis, and Kevin. In 1975, they moved to better land south of Sexsmith where they farmed until 1989 when they began travelling to Mesa for the winters together until Bert’s passing in 1994. In 1996, Sylvia married Garnet Hommy and they continued to spend winters in Mesa and summers travelling to rodeos for many years.

Sylvia will be missed dearly by her sons and daughters-in-law Tom (Pat), Greg (Karen), Ron (Louana), and Kevin (Kathy), 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and her caregivers Alona, Agnes, and Teresita. She is predeceased by her husbands Bert Chrenek and Garnet Hommy, siblings Fred Horneland, Alice Ford, Ken Horneland, and Lyla May Johnson, parents Olan and Hanna Horneland, son Dennis Chrenek, and great-grandson Charley Shoemaker.

Sylvia loved to play the piano, from ages 6 to 96. As a child she walked for miles to lessons, skating along the frozen creek to those lessons in the winter. In the senior home she played songs from memory for anyone who came to visit. She was a passionate member of the CWL and Royal Purple. She loved to travel – to Norway, Slovakia, Hawaii, Arizona, and on multiple cruises, to name a few of her destinations. She loved playing golf – especially when she beat Bert. She loved her family – she lost many and loved them all.

Sylvia was an incredible woman who will be deeply missed. Funeral services will be held 11am Thursday June 26 at St. Joseph’s Church in Grande Prairie and a luncheon will follow in Tranquille Hall.

The funeral service will be available for viewing via livestream for anyone who is unable to attend in person.

Sylvia and Bert were good friends of my parents and Bert was my godfather. My sisters Donna and Debbie and myself remember visiting them on the farm on summer holidays - watching the boys play ball. Sylvia was so kind and dad and Bert always up to shenanigans. Sending our deepest sympathies- treasure the memories.
