Obituary For Cyril "Bub" Joseph O'Hearn

Downtown Dartmouth has lost a prominent Business and Sportsman. Cyril "Bub'' Joseph O'Hearn was born in Dartmouth on October 18,1923 and was the son of Thomas F. and Clemence Maud O'Hearn. Bub loved Dartmouth from the beginning of his childhood and walked every inch of it looking for a frozen pond or lake to skate on. He worked for the Halifax Ship Yard as a machinist apprentice. He started his business career at the age of 23 years old, as on August 2,1947 he opened the first Sports Store in Dartmouth, The Dartmouth Sports Store. He would later go on to open the first Beverage Room, The Corral Coffee Shop, The Port View Restaurant, The Harbour Lights Lounge and then the most popular,Little Nashville, the only Cabaret in Dartmouth. He showcased several celebrity artists over the years and people visited the well known Cabaret from all around the world. His greatest passion was for sports and he played them all, his favourite being hockey. Bub played in many different hockey leagues, sometimes at the same time. He would go on to win many accomplishments across the different leagues, with his best coming while sharing a line with his brothers, Cecil and Gerald. In the 1945-46 season for The Halifax Ship Yards, he captured the scoring title with 24 goals and 10 assists. His talents caught the eyes of many across the province, with him being offered and taking his talents to play in the South Shore. He would Captain several teams he played for and after his playing career, he coached and refereed his son's teams. His other love was softball. He organized and was President of several softball leagues. He pitched a one hit shutout game to win the NS Softball Championship Title in 1957. Bub worked with his good friend Bishop Austin Burke and donated ball uniforms and sports equipment to children in need. He was well known for his generosity but never spoke of it. On June 14, 2017 his Dartmouth Industrial Marine Union 1957 Fastball Team was inducted into The Maritime Sport Hall of Fame, reuniting with his fellow teammates. Bub was an avid golfer, a long time member at Brightwood. In 1975 Bub won the Sam Slick Invitational at Avon Valley, setting a course record with a score of 71. Bub loved to garden, enjoyed bird watching with his wife Betty and traveled when he could pull himself away from his children. Bub also loved to spend as much time as he could with his grandkids, going by “Grampy”. He had a great sense of humour and knew how to get what he wanted. He decided as a young man he would like to own a convertible so he cut the roof off his car. Bub was kind and gave selflessly to his family and many others.Totally committed and loving. To say he will be missed would be an understatement. Cyril is survived by his daughter Debra O'Hearn-Gray (Greg), son Christopher O'Hearn (Donna) and grandchildren Morgan, Brandon and Carson. Along with his parents, Bub was predeceased by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Shupe; three brothers, Buster(Rooney), Cecil, Gerald; three sisters, Marie(Rooney), Marguerite(Rooney) Whebby, and Mary Aldrich. We would like to thank the VON for the dedicated care provided over the years, especially, Misty. CBI Homecare, Shaun and Matt. Paul Nguyen for his caring visits, Courtney Butler and the wonderful doctors and nurses at The Dartmouth General Hospital.

To remember Bub O'Hearn please help a person in need and be kind.

We as Bub’s children would ask you to take a moment to reflect on a special time you may have shared with our dad.

Play on Dad!

Due to unforeseen circumstances our Dad's, Cyril Bub O'Hearn, funeral will not take place on Thursday May 26. It will be held on Wednesday June 1 at 11:00am at Saint Peters Catholic Church. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause for those who were planning to attend.

The memory I'd like to share is one of my earliest. As a child, my elder brother and I grew up a couple doors over from the O'Hearns (on Clearview Crescent). I can still remember Mr. O'hearn coming over to help my grandparents (Cameron & Faye Gaetz) set up the skating rink in our backyard where my brother and I first learned to skate. I'm not sure which was the bigger deal ~ getting our own private skating rink or just the sheer fun of watching my grandfather and Mr. O'Hearn out there with our garden hose flooding our backyard with water .. but I've always fondly remembered both the delight of watching that happen and, Mr. O'Hearns kindness, for coming over and helping erect the barrier walls for our little rink. Warmest regards and heartfelt condolences to Chris, Debbie (and family) at this most difficult time. Cameron-Peter Ballard.

Bub was a true gentleman in every way. He always exhibited a positive view of life. I never heard him complain. His love of his family was evident and no one who met him could help but like him. He made this world a better place. It was a privilege and a pleasure to know him. Doug Livingstone

Bub O'Hearn was one of the Business Names of Downtown Dartmouth, along with the Bell Boys, the Mattatalls, and Bill Martin, to name only a few. They were all for the betterment of Dartmouth. I wanted an upgrade on my bike and there was no question where we were going...To see Mr. O'Hearn at the Dartmouth Sports Store. I had saved my money when I was 13 for a CCM Grand Tourismo, 10 speed racing bike. I had it for many years. I remember Mr. O'Hearn looked Grumpy, but once he spoke, it eased my mind. When it came time to pay, I forgot about the tax and he just made the price work. His legend lives on. Dear Debbie, Heather and I feel for you on the loss of your Father. We know with your daily care and making sure he had what he needed, lengthened his life and you made him comfortable as only a kind, loving daughter could. The drives you took him on whether for an appointment, or just to enjoy one an-other's company, were all worth it for both of you. Your black Volvo could be seen at your Father's house most days. Even the last week Bub was in the hospital, you stayed with him night and day at the Dartmouth General. We are thinking of you, Carson and Greg. Condolences to your family. It is times like this that make you realize we should take as much leisure time as can be afforded with our family before it is too late. You Debbie have certainly fulfilled that time. If we could choose 3, A Blue candle for the Water of Lake Charles where his home was, Green Candle for the Grass that led to the Lake and a White candle for the Heavenly Mist that may take Bub's soul to a heavenly place of Peace and Comfort with those that have gone before him. Kim and Heather Conrad

Dearest Debi and family. I will always treasure my visits with you and your Dad, and often Carson, when your dad was enjoying his Chickenburger visit. He was such a gentle man, full of love for you and his family and always had a twinkle in his eye. I was so thankful to have met him and enjoyed our little visits.
