Obituary For James Leslie Shellnutt

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of James Leslie Shellnutt at 71 years. Jim was born in Cornwallis, NS in 1951 and passed February 6th 2023 in Lower Sackville.

Jim is survived by his children, Kelly (Dave), Melissa (Mark) and Stephen (Meghan), as well as his grandchildren Alex, Andrea, Lucy, Wyatt, and Finn; together with brother Wayne (Ingrid), sister Brenda (Mark), brother-in-law Charles and sister-in-law Janet as well as many nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by parents Margaret and Ernest Shellnutt, siblings Bill (Joan), Barbara, Nancy (Stewart), Philip and nephew Brent.

Jim grew up spending summers at the family cottage in Fox Point where the extended Shellnutt families eventually would come to enjoy the annual corn boil. One of Jim’s proudest accomplishments was opening the Cole Harbour Road Esso with his brother Bill, where he would support many local sports teams and the community.

Road trips to Connecticut to visit his grandmother and to PEI to spend time family friends were always at top of Jim’s summer plans. Jim prioritized maintaining his close social circle with many lifelong relationships that meant the world to him. His personable nature made avoiding friendships impossible.

A special thank you to the Sagewood Continuing Care Community staff for the compassionate care and support for both Jim and family over the past year.

A celebration of life will take place February 11th 2023, at the Cole Harbour Fire Hall located at 1150 Cole Harbour Road between 1-4pm. Words of remembrance will shared at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

Hello All, Sorry to hear of Jimmy's passing. "Nutshell" and I were Mrs. Sagar's Grade 7 at Caledonia Junior High and fully enjoyed getting into trouble together. I fully remember him sitting behind me ( I was put in the front row) and as he bugged me, I slid my ruler below and in- behind me and jammed somewhere private. He howled and jumped but didn't squeal (on me) when Mrs. Sagar asked, "Jimmie, is there anything wrong? I will always cherish the fun that we had together and his dry laugh. Enjoy the hereafter. Peter Connor- Grade 7D.

Kelly, Melissa and Steven ... your dad was a big loveable Teddy Bear. He was always up for a good time and a yarn ... he loved to talk about you guys and what you were all doing. He was so very proud of you. I remember when someone (probably your dad) glued a Toonie to the floor of the service station and when customers came in they tried to pick it up, of course they couldn't .... Well you could hear your dad's laugh all over Cole Harbour, just one of many laughs we had together through the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Dave and Carolyn McGrath

Jim was well liked by everyone; he was a big teddy bear 😊 I hadn't seen Him for awhile because I had moved away but if I did see him it was like time hadn't passed. I remember Friday nights we would have a couple of drinks in his basement and then head off to Our Friends Pub. Jim like to play the machines and I liked to dance, so it worked well for both of us! Then we would leave and go to the drive thru at McDonald's and order takeout whether we took a cab or not! Lol We had lots of fun. I'm glad he was my friend ❤️

Back in the day I worked for Atlas Auto parts and we sold auto parts to Jim. But my fondness memory of Jim is I joined him for an all nighter bonspiel at the Dartmouth curling club. He was skipping and I was playing mate and we won it. It was a great time and he was the happiest of curlers that morning. My condolences to the family may he rest in peace.

Jimmy Shellnutt Larger than life, always smiling, always positive and never lost for words. A good man and good friend. My memory is a little cloudy but I believe I first met Jimmy over 50 years ago, originally through my sister but was surprised when I ran into him at Nova Scotia Savings and Loan when I started working there in 1974. Jimmy worked in loans and I in accounting. Jimmy left NSSL shortly after that but we continued to cross paths often through curling. I started a rental league in Dartmouth which Jimmy played in and then Jimmy started the Sunday morning league at CFB Curling Club which I joined. We had great fun and camaraderie for many years. I think his plan might have had something to do with avoiding church and an opportunity to drink beer on Sunday morning. Not as good as we thought we were but always doing our best and always following curling's history of sportsmanship and fair play. We kind of lost touch for several years as everyone gets busy and self involved but I was so pleased to see Jimmy at my surprise 60th birthday party. I was decoyed out of the house and when I returned Jimmy was the first person I saw, and I immediately thought what the hell is Jimmy Shellnutt doing here. It's so sad to lose someone so full of life. Our heart felt condolences to the family ❤️

We have lived in Mineville for 42 years now. One evening while driving home on the 107 our cars transmission locked up and we were left stranded on a cold winter night. My wife was pregnant at the time, so we started our long walk home to Candy Mountain Road. As we walked a gentleman in his truck stopped, offered to drive us home and offered us towing service to the dealership for repairs. The kind gentleman was of course Jim Shellnut. We were very grateful for his kindness to strangers. We often went to Shellnut Esso thereafter of course. Our condolences to the entire family. Dr Robert Bethune DTh and Ellie Bethune
