Obituary For Douglas Ames Lynch

In Memory of Douglas Ames Lynch

It is with profound sadness that the family of Douglas Ames Lynch, 92, of Hatchet Lake, announce his peaceful passing on August 15, 2026, at the Victoria General Hospital. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and uncle, Doug left us embraced by love.

Born in Halifax in 1934, Douglas was the son of the late Gordon and Olive (Ames) Lynch. Doug married the love of his life, Shirley, whom he lovingly called “Nik”, in 1956. They would build an incredible life together while raising 5 children.

Doug discovered his love of travel at a young age, traversing across Canada throughout his teenage years. He would eventually return to his hometown of Halifax, where he entered the Navy and served his country for 25 years, retiring in 1977. After his retirement from the CAF, he held a position at Eyretechnics Limited, a Canadian engineering and defense consulting firm.

Doug had an adventurous spirit and a love of the open road. He enjoyed nothing more than hooking up his trailer and setting off with “Nik”, travelling throughout North America and creating a lifetime of memories along the way.

Doug’s greatest love was his wife and lifelong companion Shirley. Their 70-year marriage was a remarkable testament to love, devotion and partnership. After more than seven decades together, his love for her remained as deep and unwavering as ever.

Doug’s family gave him the utmost joy. He had an immense love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as “YaYa”. Over the years, his family would join him on many of his travels, creating cherished memories and sharing adventures that meant so much to him.

In his later years, he found joy and peace in his garden, a place he especially loved sharing with his great grandchildren. He took pride in showing them the fruits of his labour, passing along not only his knowledge, but the patience, care, and appreciation for the simple things that defined him. He treasured every moment spent with his family, and the memories, lessons and love will remain with them for a lifetime.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved and always remembered.

Doug is survived by his beloved wife Shirley (Smeltzer), sister Gwen (Chuck) and his loving children, Gary, Greg (Ellen), Donna, Doreen (Percy), his grandchildren, Brandon (Lauren), Matthew, Benjamin (Eli), Michelle (Louis), Marlie (Steve) and Alex (Stewart), as well as great-grandchildren Jackson, Hayden, Theo, Mateo, Kara and Gibson. He will also be lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Doug was predeceased by his son Douglas, brothers Darrell and Gerald and sister Doreen.

The Lynch family would also like to acknowledge and thank the doctors, nurses, and staff from 7.3 and 8.4 at the QE2 as well as 9.4 at the VG Hospital.

A Celebration of Life will take place Thursday, August 27th at 1:00 at the MacDonald Memorial Legion, 231 Greenhead Road, Lakeside, NS.

Those wishing to honor Dad's memory may make donations to Hope for Wildlife.

Uncle Doug, I am so blessed to have had you as my God Father and Uncle. You were such a beautiful soul 💛. Always smiling, and always full of so much love ❤️. I always loved being in yours and aunt Shirley's presence, listening to many beautiful memories you both shared together, and always helping animals in need. Those animals were so very lucky to have had you and aunt Shirley take care of them I dont think anyone could love them more than you both did. I will never forget the day I missed the bus at school and started walking in the pouring rain, when I got to a pay phone to call mom she called you and aunt Shirley and with no hesitation you were there picking me up in timberlea, you dont know how much that drive meant to me and I will never forget it. I love you and will miss you dearly Uncle Doug. Rest peacefully my dear beautiful Uncle. Sending lots of hugs and love to aunt Shirley, Doreen, Donna, Greg and Gary and all your loved ones. Xoxo

Uncle Doug, You were such a special man, and a wonderful part of our family. Visiting with you and Aunt Shirley and listening to your wonderful stories and adventures was always such a pleasure. My favourite was your recollection of the day you met Aunt Shirley. How she took your breath away in her pretty red dress, and knowing that she was "your girl" at first sight! You two shared the most beautiful and precious love. We all felt it when we were in your presence. You truly were soulmates. Losing you was hard but having you in our lives was such a blessing. Lots of heartfelt love and hugs to all feeling your loss. Lisa ♥️ Wayne, Zach, Lauren and Hannah xoxoxo
