Obituary For Frank Roland "Rollie" Walter Avis

Frank Roland “Rollie” Walter Avis

August, 1936 – August 27, 2025

Frank Roland (Rollie) Walter Avis passed away peacefully on August 27th at Hants Community Hospital, surrounded by the music he loved. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, on August, 1936, he was the second child of the late Frank and Lillian (Rosser) Avis.

Rollie is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Avis (Pye); his sons, Sean and Alan Avis; his cherished grandchildren, Nehiely and Piper (Xepher); and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Jerry and Eddie Avis, and his sister, Valerie Southern.

Rollie had a deep love for the outdoors. In his younger years, he was an avid sport fisherman, exploring the lakes and rivers of Nova Scotia with his brothers. It was through these adventures that he met the love of his life, Sylvia, and started a family. He shared his love of nature with them, spending countless nights camping and paddling the waters of Kejimkujik National Park.

In retirement, Rollie found peace and fulfillment living in nature with Sylvia at their home on Armstrong Lake. Surrounded by forest and water, he embraced the quiet rhythms of the natural world and continued to nurture his passion for gardening. Like his brother Jerry, he had a “need to seed,” and created stunning gardens wherever he lived. His greatest horticultural achievement was at Armstrong Lake, where he transformed a patch of forest into an oasis that welcomed family and friends.

Rollie cherished his time with his family and close friends.

Cremation has been entrusted to Donald K. Walker Funeral Directors of Dartmouth, NS. There will be no visitation, but a celebration of Rollie’s life will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be shared at donaldkwalker.ca/obituaries.

The family wishes to thank his close friends and the staff of Hants Community Hospital for their care and compassion during this time.
