Obituary For Joan Marie Clarke (Blum)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Marie Clarke (née Blum), who passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 21, 2026, at the Halifax Infirmary.

Born in March 1945, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Joan was the cherished daughter of Anne Blum (née Bellefontaine) and William Blum. She grew up in Halifax's North End, where she developed the strong family values, determination, and caring spirit that would define her life. After graduating from Business College, she met her soulmate and the love of her life, John "Butch" Clarke, beginning a partnership built on love, devotion, and friendship that lasted nearly 60 years.

Throughout her life, Joan held various positions, including nursery school teacher, in-home childcare provider, and retail associate. However, the role she treasured above all others was that of wife, mother, and grandmother.

Joan enjoyed painting, word games, card games, and spending evenings watching hockey and baseball. She was especially known for her love of baking and sharing her creations with family and friends.

Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, John "Butch" Clarke; her parents, William and Anne Blum; and her sister, Mary West.

She leaves behind her loving daughter, Rhonda (Lance Bleeker); her son, Tony Clarke (Kelly Varbeff); her treasured grandchildren, Jeremy Clarke and Shanyn Bleeker; as well as many extended family members and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Fred Sampson, a dear friend whose kindness, friendship, and care brought great comfort to Joan. His support during her time of need will always be remembered with gratitude.

A Celebration of Joan's Life will be held at the Kinsmen Community Centre, 71 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, on Friday, November 6, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Joan's granddaughter, Shanyn, shares:

"My fondest memories of Nana, besides her unwavering love and kindness, would be baking with her, using her plastic knife as I chopped up the vegetables to make salads for Papa, and planting flowers in her garden. Missing her a lot and loving her forever."

— Shanyn

Joan's grandson, Jeremy, shares:

"Some of my fondest memories of Nana are our trips to the library, enjoying her delicious homemade baking, and the many family adventures we shared, especially our trips to Crystal Palace. Her kindness, warmth, and the special moments we spent together are memories I will cherish forever."

— Jeremy

Joan will be remembered for her warmth, sense of humor, and the deep love she shared with family and friends. Her legacy lives on through the countless memories she created and the lives she touched.

Forever loved, deeply missed, and always remembered. ❤️
