Obituary For Andrew Abraham

Andrew Abraham of Halifax passed away peacefully on October 14, 2026 after a brief battle with cancer. He would have been glad that he made it deeper into October than the Yankees.

Andrew loved sports. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of baseball, and cried tears of joy when the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series. He lived to see the Red Sox win four World Series, the Red Wings win four Stanley Cups, and the Boston Celtics win ten NBA Championships. Unfortunately he was also a Cleveland Browns fan.

So much of Andrew’s life was spent at baseball fields and curling clubs. He was an okay athlete, an excellent coach, and perhaps the greatest volunteer our province has ever seen. He dedicated an enormous amount of time and effort to coaching youth sports, and was a mentor to hundreds of athletes. Nothing brought him greater joy than coaching and spending hours on the phone after baseball games dissecting baseball and life with Coach Larry.

Andrew lived his life with no regrets, and appreciated every day he got. He laughed often and had a keen wit. He enjoyed travelling, but had a terrible sense of direction. He was quick to stand up for what he believed in. He was never able to successfully fix a dishwasher but he was an amazing dad who was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. Nobody expressed gratitude as often or as sincerely as Andrew. Until the end, he considered himself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.

“Abes” had an extremely close group of lifelong friends in Alisdair, Elaine, Cherrie, Rosalie, Chris, Craig, Carol, Evan, Lenora, Jeff, Darlene, Mike, Sally, Steve and Helen, who, along with Steve and Shiona, all loved him enough to never let him live anything down. Andrew also appreciated the support he received from his incredible co-workers at Northbridge Financial.

Andrew loved a lot of people, and he told people frequently that he loved them. We loved him back. He is predeceased by his parents, Jim Abraham and Peggy Abraham (MacNeil), as well as his sister-in-law Corinne and brother-in-law Joe, who will all be glad to see him wherever he is. He is survived by his first and only wife Gail, sons Matthew (Rachael), Chris (Erin), and Ryan, grandchildren Maddie and Luca, siblings Jim (Andra), Jack, and Joanne, and mother-in-law Joyce Mercer. He also leaves behind his beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless family, friends, teammates, and people who loved him and will carry him in their memories forever.

There’s not enough room in an obituary to sum up the life of such a fundamentally good man. Andrew wasn’t a fan of funerals but the family will host a celebration of his life in 2027, with details to come.

Andrew’s family would like to thank all those who visited, reached out and cared for him during his illness, including the teams at the Halifax Infirmary unit 7.3, unit 5.2, and West Bedford Transitional Health.

Those wishing to honour Andrew, Andrew would want you to do something good for others by volunteering in your community.
