Obituary For Mary Christina (Chris) Skerry

Mary Christina (Chris) Skerry, 91, passed away peacefully at home on November 15th, 2020, with family at her side.

For many years, she was an active member of the C.W.L. for St. Michael’s Church, Spryfield. Chris worked for many years for the Attorney Generals Department before taking a leave to become a home maker. To say she excelled in these roles is a vast understatement.

Her heart and her home were open to everyone who came to her door, especially those in need of a place to stay, a sympathetic ear, a word of encouragement and hope. She loved to cook, bake and knit and was happiest when surrounded by family and friends gathered at her table for family festivities. Her generosity knew no bounds.

Chris loved music of all kinds but had a special place in her heart for Cape Breton fiddle and piano as well as Scottish laments on the bagpipes. Her hobbies were reading, sewing, and in later years, knitting.

The daughter of the late John and Mary Sarah (nee Gillis) MacNeil, she was born in Saint Rose, Inverness County, Nova Scotia on July 24, 1929. She is survived by her loving husband, Frank, and her two sons, Patrick (Cindy), and Anthony (Shelly) as well as her grandchildren, Cody, Kyle, Anthony, Breana, Cassidy, Mason and Evan. She is also survived by her sister, Anna (Tom) Young, Halifax, and her sister-in -law, Florence MacNeil, Whitby, ON, as well as the Skerry family, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who will long treasure her loving generosity and hospitality. Chris was predeceased by her brother Jimmie, half sister Allena (Joe) Phillips, half siblings Mary Sarah, Jim Angus, John Archie, Alex Dan (Theresa), Lizzie Anne, Lewis (Marion) MacLellan, and childhood “big brother”, Archie Gillis. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who assisted them in her years of failing health. A special thank you is extended to her niece, Iris Phillips, who lovingly cared for Chris at her home in her final days.

Arrangements are under the direction of Walker’s Funeral Home, Dartmouth.

An act of kindness toward someone in need would be the best way to honour the memory of this selfless, unique and remarkable woman.

May she rest in peace. Fois do t’anam.

Everyone should be as lucky to have an Aunt who embodies everything that Aunt Chris did for me and my family. She was a special person who made all around her feel like they were loved and welcome at any time of day or night. Her kindness and empathy are a rare gift, and we are all better for having known her. Rest in peace Aunt Chris, you will forever be in our hearts.

My dearest Chris...... I will cherish all the wonderful memories we created over the years. My children (your Grandchildren) have wonderful memories of you that they will cherish forever. My children will miss their Sunday visits with you. I remember when I was having Anthony that my Mom and I asked you if you wanted to be in the delivery room. You were so excited and the expression on your face said it all. We spoke of Anthony's birth for years. That is one special memory I will never forget. I missed the last couple of years with you but you were always close to my heart. You now have your Angel wings. Enjoy singing with my Mom and dad. My children miss you dearly and their memories of you will help them through. Breana still has your banana loaf recipe and misses her time baking with you. You had a wonderful life Chris.... till we meet again. Xoxo
