Obituary For John David Stonehouse

John David Stonehouse, born on August 1, 1947, in Glace Bay, NS, passed away on April 16, 2023.

Dave was the son of the late Fern and Donald Stonehouse, both from Springhill, NS. He married Linda Louise Butt on July 3, 1971, in Botwood, NL. Together they raised two sons, Scott (Jennifer) and Mark (Melanie). Dave was a devoted grandfather to MacLean, Oscar, Drew, Sydney, and Lewis. He is also survived by his sister, Greta (Bob) Chandler & family, Sister in-law Janice Stonehouse & family, Brother in-law Eric (Mavis) Butt & family, and is predeceased by his brother Jim Stonehouse.

Dave received his B.Sc. (Honours) from Mt. Allison University in 1969, B.Ed. in 1970 and M.Sc. at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1973. He had a successful career with North Star Cement Ltd & Atlantic Minerals Ltd in Corner Brook, NL where he was VP Research and Development at retirement.

Dave loved music and getting together with friends to sing. He was an active member of several church choirs throughout his life in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. He was a Trustee at Humber United Church and a Foodbank Volunteer at Cole Harbour Woodside Church. Dave was also an active member of the Newfoundland Mining Association, where he was highly respected for his contributions to the industry.

In his free time, Dave enjoyed hiking, hunting, fishing, and exploring the natural beauty of his surroundings. He had a passion for giving back to his community and was known for his generosity and kindness.

Dave will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 20, 7-9 PM and a Celebration of Life will be held on April 21, 3:00 PM, both at Cole Harbour Woodside United Church, Cole Harbour, NS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Feed Nova Scotia, CHWUC Foodbank or your local foodbank.

Rest in peace, Dave. Your legacy will live on in the memories of those who loved you.

I'm so sorry Linda and family to hear of this news, Dave was always so good to me. I will always remember our talks about the birds, on our walks during my stay with you guys when I had my kidneys removed. He drove all over Halifax and surrounding areas showing me all the great spots for birding, before my operation. The best of them were right in his backyard, the eagles. He loved watching them and I learned so much from him. Dave you will be greatly missed. Linda my heart goes out to you and know you are in my prayers. Nina
