Obituary For Olive "Ollie" Joyce Helpard

HELPARD, Olive (Ollie) Joyce, 94, passed peacefully into the arms of her loving husband, Don, on March 5, 2023 at the Halifax Infirmary QEII site. Born in Glace Bay, NS, she was the daughter of the late Isabel (Spencer) and Andy Anderson. Ollie was the matriarch of our close-knit family and will be deeply missed. She moved to Halifax as a teenager and met the love of her life. They raised their four children with an abundant amount of love and respect. She spent many years as owner of the Tiara Beauty Salon in Spryfield. She was a member and past Trustee of St. Paul’s United Church, where she was a long-time member of the Senior Choir and Handbell Choir. Ollie doted on her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She rarely missed a baseball, hockey or soccer game or a dance recital or Sunday school play wherein any of us participated, whether it was in town or on the road. Nowhere was too far for Nanny Ollie to go to cheer on her family! She is survived by her sister Shaureen Shephard (Rick), children Val Halverson (Terry), Deb MacDougall (Danny), Andy (Nancy) and Sandra Gray (Darren). Also surviving are her grandchildren: Kerri-Ann Halverson (Sylvan), Craig Halverson (Theresa), Ryan Halverson (Vanessa), Matthew MacDougall (Amy), Heather Donnelly (James), Shaun Helpard (Daniele), Gillian Helpard (Dale), Paul Gray (Kristen) and Peter Gray (Castine). Missing her are her great-grandchildren: Sidney, Preston and Emily Halverson, Kinleigh and Barrett MacDougall, Ruby and Jack Donnelly and Alexis Gray. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Don, as well as her parents Isabel and Andy Anderson, her sister Verna Nichol (Tom), brother Chalmers (Ione) and great granddaughter, Addison Rose MacDougall. Celebration of life in honour of Ollie will be held on Friday, March 10, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s United Church, 173 Old Sambro Road, Halifax, NS Many thanks to the first responders from Station 62, the EHS paramedics as well as the nurses and doctors at the QEII ER for their loving care and compassion. Family flowers only please. Donations can be made to St. Paul’s United Church or a charity of your choice.

I have many fond memories of cousin Ollie, Don, and all the kids visiting in Cape Breton; there is a small travel trailer in those memories. I also remember their warmth and hospitality when we visited them. She was lively, and kind, and a very special spirit. She always stayed in touch with Mom (Kaye) for as long as Mom was able. My thoughts are with all the many loved family members during this time. With love, Wendy Chappell & Family

Hello Deb I was sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Words can never describe what we feel when we lose a Parent. My late Dad always told me that it was an Honor to bury a Parent and a Tragedy to bury a Child. Your Mom is at rest now. Graham Campbell

Our sincerest apologies to the family. If I had not been a client of Ollie, I would not have met my soulmate who also worked with her. That was 50 years ago. But I have known the family much longer. She will be sadly missed by all
