Baker, James Russell – 59, of Halifax, passed away unexpectedly at home on September 17, 2026.

James grew up in Dartmouth and Eastern Passage, and attended Dartmouth High School. Following his graduation, he went on to NSCC where he studied culinary arts and became a prep chef.

James worked in various restaurants throughout the HRM before transitioning to a role as a grocery manager at Sobeys. For the last six years, he worked in housekeeping at the Halifax Infirmary.

Outside of work, James had many hobbies. He loved building LEGO sets with his son, Jacob, and cherished camping trips and his many vacations to the Dominican Republic with his wife, Paula. He also treasured family time, especially gathering at his brother Jerry’s place to play cards and share a good laugh.

James will be remembered as a kind, patient man who loved to be around family. He was a loving husband, father, sibling, and friend.

James is survived by his wife, Paula Woodman Baker, and his son, Jacob Baker of Halifax. He is also survived by his siblings: brothers, Jerry Baker of Eastern Passage and Jason Baker of Dartmouth; and sisters, Judy Baker, Jeannie Baker, and Joy Pothier of Dartmouth, and Debbie Baker-Stewart of Eastern Passage. He leaves behind an extended family of many nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as a deeply valued extended family from his workplace.

James was predeceased by his father, Theodore Baker of West Jeddore; his mother, Elizabeth "Betty" MacDonald of Herring Cove; and his ex-wife, Angela (Campbell) Baker.

Please join us in honoring James at his service on Saturday, October 3, 2026, 11am, at St. Peter's Church, 346 Cow Bay Road. A reception will follow.
