Obituary For Susanne Elizabeth McHugh "Bradley"

SUSANNE ELIZABETH McHUGH (nee Bradley) April 11, 1946 – March 17, 2022

Susanne Elizabeth McHugh passed away on St. Patrick’s Day following a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by family and, the love of her life and soul mate, husband Paddy. She was 75 years old.

She is predeceased by parents, Fred and Dorothy (Large) Bradley, brother Ted and sister-in-law Marg Bradley, niece Marilyn and father-in-law Donald McHugh.

She is survived by husband Donald Patrick (Paddy) McHugh and daughters Karen (Grant) Baldwin, Cherie (Justin) Kelly and grandchildren Luke, Max, Jorjah, Phoebe, Abi and Hugh.

She is also survived by brother Carl and Stephanie Bradley, nieces Carlene (Anthony) Ebsworth and Elizabeth (Allan) Vickerson, all of Prince Edward Island, niece Sharon (Mike) Foy, nephew Teddy (Ruth Anne) Bradley, all from Massachusetts. Her McHugh family, mother-in-law Mary McHugh (Nan Nan), Brockville and brothers-in-law Terance (Colleen), Timothy (Ruth), Gregory (Kathy), Kevin (Margaret) – all from HRM and sister-in-law Cathy, Brockville as well as nieces Julie and Lauren; nephews Dylan, Eric, Darcy and Connor and great niece Olivia.

Susanne was and remained an island girl, having grown up on Prince Edward Island and graduated from business college in the 1960s. She had a long and successful career with Deloitte and upon retirement spent time traveling the Eastern United States on shopping trips, excursions south with Paddy and serving as a (part-time) first mate on the Paddy Wagon.

Her second love, to husband Paddy, was spending time on the beach in the sunshine. Her happiest place on earth was at her niece Carlene’s (Anthony) home at Sunset Dunes, PEI. Susanne was an avid reader (and like her daughter Cherie) enjoyed good feed of fresh lobster! She loved her daughter Karen’s fudge and drinking an ice-cold beer with her father-in-law Don (who has one waiting for her “upstairs”).

Steak and kidney pie was another favorite meal. Susanne and brother Carl would “count the kidneys” when their Mom would serve it up – checking on who had more!

A minimalist at heart, she loved to shop and could always make room for more shoes! Shopping road trips to New England were among her Top Favorites things to do along with enjoying a nice meal out.

Her (6) grandchildren brought her much joy and she loved spending time with them. Nana was oh, so proud of all of them and their accomplishments.

We “hear” she was a bit of a wild child growing up and things changed when she met Paddy in 1964. They were married on November 28, 1969 and started their family in 1971. Susanne had a great sense of humour and you always knew where you stood. She was a straight shooter who held no punches. She loved a good laugh and had a quick wit like her soul mate Paddy.

She enjoyed music of all types and genres – from Michael Buble to Rod Stewart, Elton John was her favorite. So as we say Good-bye as she travels that Yellow Brick Road, Susanne’s candle in the wind will be forever lit in our hearts here at home. And from this March 17th forward, will now be known as Saint Susanne and Paddy’s Day. Rest In Peace Susanne, Mom, Nana – We love you!

A very special thank-you goes out to oncologist Dr. Ravi, nurse Shelby and the entire nursing team on the 11th floor of the Chemo Treatment Unit. They are saints and angels in their own right.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Friday, May 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their residence, 90 Hogan Court, Bedford (The Social Room). This is an informal drop-in event without fanfare as per Susanne’s wishes.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local chapter of the Canadian Diabetes Society or the local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society or the QEII Foundation.
