Obituary For Gregory Allan Ross

Gregory Allan Ross, 80, of Halifax, NS, passed away peacefully with family by his side on May 18, 2026.

Born in February 1946, in Halifax, Greg was the son of the late Ada and Wiley Ross.

Greg is survived by his wife Kathryn, son Andrew (Katherine), grandchildren Theodore and Claire, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Ryan, brothers Brian, Bill, Paul, Joe, and sister, Marguerite.

Along with Kathryn, Greg was a steadfast support and advocate for Ryan who suffered from the lifelong disease and complications of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.

At the center of Greg’s life was his beloved wife and devoted soulmate, Kathryn, with whom he shared a remarkable 60-year love story, with marriage for 56 years. He was a loving father to his two sons, Andrew and Ryan, and a proud grandfather to Theo and Claire, who brought him immense joy. He will be greatly missed by his beloved cats, Pesto and Pepper and he fondly remembered his dog, Buttons.

Greg deeply valued education and pursued lifelong learning throughout his life. He attended St. Mary’s Boys School and St. Patrick’s High School before earning both a Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Education from St. Mary’s University, followed by an MBA from Dalhousie University.

Greg dedicated his professional life to education and mentorship. He began his career as a Business Education teacher at J.L. Ilsley, St. Patrick’s, and Queen Elizabeth High School, later serving as Vice Principal at Queen Elizabeth High School and as Principal of Continuing Education with the Halifax District School Board. His leadership, integrity, and commitment to students and colleagues earned him deep respect throughout the community. In addition to his teaching career, inspired by his passion for all things business related, he formed a consulting company, assisting his family members with their commercial enterprises.

He was actively involved in many organizations over the years, including the St. Mary’s Basilica Boys Choir, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and the St. Patrick’s High School hockey team. Greg also served as a volunteer Executive Member of the Canadian Martyrs Basketball Association from 1988 to 2000. He was a longtime member of the Waegwoltic Club.

Greg found great happiness in nature and gardening. He was passionate about creating beautiful landscapes and gardens, most especially at StoneOak, the family’s cherished home on the Northwest Arm for more than 30 years, and later through his work at the Gorsebrook Community Garden (PUGS).

In recent years, Greg courageously faced the neurodegenerative disease Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) while continuing to enjoy many of the activities he loved. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate care and support of Dr. Alison Dixon and her team.

The family also extends thanks to the staff of Unit 4.1 at the Halifax Infirmary, where Greg spent his final 48 days following a hip fracture.

Greg’s warmth, wisdom, generosity, compassion and unwavering love for his family and friends will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Funeral service will be held on May 29 at 10:00am at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 6903 Mumford Road, Halifax, with reception to follow in the Church Hall.

Kathy, Andrew and family, I was so sorry to hear of Greg's passing. He was so good to me growing up and I will always remember Kathy and Greg welcoming me into their home when my parents were away during university, giving me a place to stay. It was during university that I learned Greg had been the one who had made all of the awards for Martyrs Basketball when we were growing up. That always stayed with me as it said so much about the kind of person Greg was: kind, caring and generous with his time, energy and talents -- taking care of all the important details behind the scenes. Thinking of you during this difficult time.
