Obituary For Beverly "Bev" Leon Ashby

Ashby, Beverly (Bev) Leon – 83, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully, at home, with his wife by his side, on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. He was born in Centreville to the late Mildred Leone (Porter) Ashby and the late Harry Toshick Ashby of Dartmouth. Bev grew up in the Maritimes, living in various communities within New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, finally settling in Dartmouth in his late teens. He took his apprenticeship at Fairey Aviation as an aircraft electrician until they closed in 1969 when he decided to become self-employed as a Kitchen Cabinet Maker and finally the owner of Bev L. Ashby Skating Supplies. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Ann (Hill) Ashby, daughter, Ann Beverly (Ashby) Thompson, son-in -law, Christopher Luke Thompson, grandson, Chase Douglas Parker Thompson, grandson, Cruz Leon William Thompson, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Dorey (Reginald Dorey, deceased), brother-in-law, Lloyd Hill (Edith Hill) and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brother-in-law, George Hill (Ruth Hill, deceased). Bev loved his family very much. He spent many years at the rink with his daughter, playing music and videoing for the Dartmouth Figure 8s Skating Club. Most will remember him for his love of ABBA and as the best skate sharpener in town. He was a quiet, kind sole who would do anything he could for others in need. He enjoyed travelling the Maritimes with his wife and dog Maggie. He was not one for large social settings, but always able to carry on a great conversation that included many interesting stories. He will be missed by so many. A grave side service, at Mount Herman Cemetery, will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Ashby, Ann and family, condolences on the passing of Bev. I always enjoyed being around Bev. He was so patient and understanding with all my questions about skate sharpening, fitting and any other cool stuff I saw he was tinkering with in his shop. Really enjoyed him. I wish you all the best at this time of sadness.

Sorry to read of Bev's passing in the paper today. I regret that we didn't get to know each other. The thing that I always remember is that your daughter was a figure skater. I still watch figure skating of TV. I was trying to figure out today how many of the "Ashby grandchildren" are left. I think it is tied at 7 -7, but I am not sure about Fran. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Muriel (Ashby) Johnston, daughter of George Ashby)
