Feb 28 2009 - John Whiteway

It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late John Whiteway announce his sudden passing in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on Thursday August 20, 2026 at the age of 60.

He leaves to mourn his daughter: Sara Whiteway, mother of his children: Donna Baldwin, granddaughter: Brandi, grandson: Jesse, sisters Gloria Lasaga & Bernice King (Brian) nephew & niece Wayne & Kaitlyn Bishop (Kim), long time friends Darlene, Emily & Bruce, as well as a large circle of other relatives & friends.

He was predeceased by his son: Jonathan Whiteway, parents : Jim & Muriel Whiteway, siblings: Charles Whiteway, Jim Whiteway & Ellie Whiteway (Stumpf).

As a beloved father, son and pop John lived for his Family. It was always the heart in everything he did. The main focus in most of our conversations. He would often have an old time story to share about his parents or siblings. These stories helped shed light on his younger days, and how life was back then. One story about my grandmother Muriel Whiteway, she would often get John to stay with her after she became ill to help out. As the youngest child, John was still at home after his siblings grew up and started lives of their own. John was more than happy to be with her and to be that person for her. He was grateful to be there for her when she needed him most.

John was a hard worker, but he loved even harder.
He loved the outdoors. In his younger years he enjoyed scubba diving in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean where he once brought us home starfish souvenirs. He loved his motorcycle rides on long summer evenings & snowmobiling throughout Newfoundland during the winter months. John had many talents but his main focus was always carpentry. He took pride in his work, every move he calculated precisely. Every house he built brought him so much joy. It was his life!

Aside from his life of carpentry, he enjoyed remodeling vehicles. One of his favorite hobbies as a young man! He once remodeled a Corvette. It was in rough shape when he first brought it home. No paint, all kinds of parts inside the vehicle, literally in pieces, not running at all. It was an eye sore to be honest, but he wasn't long turning that around! By the time John was done with the Vette (as he would call it), it appeared as if it came off the lot, brand new! He turned that hunk of junk into something that anyone would love to drive!

John was so full of life, he was always up for an adventure. A super spontaneous man that loved to make each moment meaningful no matter the circumstance.

John was constantly learning and taught himself most of what he knew! A very intelligent man!

Through sharing his experience & knowledge over the years John has helped many. He would always give advice or lend a hand when someone was in need.
He was an upfront type of guy, so sometimes his honesty was blunt, but it was honest!

The amount of personality this man had is unbelievable! Just when you thought you've seen it all, in comes John with never before seen stunts! "A character" as some would say!

We are honored to have known John for 60 amazing years. Our lives are forever changed because of him & John will be endlessly loved by so many. He will never be forgotten as he was surely ONE of a kind . May we remember John for the generous, outgoing, courageous, spontaneous, loving, & brutally honest man he was!

We are beyond proud to be your family & to have known you throughout your time here.

Fly high big guy & remember not to collect any wooden nickels along your journey.

Cremation has taken place, there will be no formal visitation or funeral service. A celebration of life is taken place In Dartmouth, NS.

Burial will take place near his hometown Corner Brook, NL at a later date. Where he will be laid to rest with loved ones.
