Obituary For Honourable Peter Gordon Christie
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Peter Gordon Christie on May 31, 2021. Peter was the son of the late Marion (Robb) and George Christie. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Joan (Wilson) Christie, sons Scott (Leanne Gillis) of Halifax and Matthew (Shannon Ingraham) of Bedford, beloved granddaughters Claire and Anne, sisters Margaret Embree (Bedford) and the Rev. Catherine Christie (Abbey, Saskatchewan). He was predeceased by his infant brother, George and brother Ross Christie (2011). Peter started his accounting career at the Halifax Herald and he retired from H.H. Marshall Ltd. as VP Finance. In the 1970’s, when he got involved with the Bedford Ratepayers Association, Peter realized his true passion was community service. After Bedford achieved town status, he was elected as Councilor (two terms) and as the third Mayor of Bedford. After retirement he served two terms as MLA, elected in 1999 as MLA for Bedford/Waverley/Fall River and in 2003 for the new riding of Bedford Birch Cove. During this time, he was a member of Executive Council as part of the Premier John Hamm government and served as Minister of Community Services, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, and Minister of Finance. Peter was devoted to his family, friends and his community. He was gentle and quiet man who lived his whole life in Bedford. He had a gift for taking ordinary events and giving them a name and framework that survived decades. His lifelong friendship and interest groups that meant a great deal to him included: the Buds, the Gourmet Group, the Culture Club, the Basic 4 Hockey Guys, and the Scotch Club. Special to him were trips with the family, the big Canada Day parties on the shore and annual family visits to White Point with friends. He was a lifelong member of Bedford United Church and served as Church Treasurer, Council Chair, and Co-Chair of the 1998 Church Expansion Fundraising Campaign. He also enjoyed regular events and home dinners with church friends. He was a lifetime member of Bedford Basin Yacht Club and served as President of Bedford Minor Hockey in the 1980’s. Peter was co-founder of the Light Up Bedford Parade, Bedford’s Gentlemen’s Hockey league, 100 Bedford Men Who Care group, and was instrumental in resurrecting the Bedford Business Association and the Bedford Volunteer of the Year Awards. Peter’s was a life well lived. His contributions, like his friendships, were numerous. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him. Funeral announcements at a later, post Covid, date. Memorial contributions can be made to Bedford United Church (1200 Bedford Highway, Bedford, NS B4A 1C3) or Beacon House Interfaith Society Food Bank (P O Box 513, Lower Sackville, NS B4C 3G4).
