Obituary For Joseph "Joe" David Mercer

On July 26, 2022, a beautiful, warm, sunny day, Joseph “Joe” David Mercer passed away peacefully at the QEII hospital, surrounded by family.

He grew up in Halifax, the son of Joyce (Boutilier) and the late Joe “Buddy” Mercer. He attended Oxford School, St. Patrick’s High School and Humber College, where he nurtured his passion for photography.

Joe enjoyed a simple life and never complained about the various medical challenges he encountered along the way. A happy afternoon for Joe meant listening to good music, making himself a chicken wrap with salsa and lots of mushrooms, and staying in touch with friends and family on his computer. He enjoyed discussions on current events, especially politics, and was a dedicated follower of his nephews’ accomplishments. On Christmas Day, he looked forward to his brother-in-law’s breakfast, always commenting “Andrew’s scrambled eggs are so good,” and passing out the family scratch tickets every year after the holiday meal.

He is survived by his mother Joyce, sister Gail, brother-in-law Andrew Abraham, nephews Matthew (Rachael Hall), Christopher (Erin Cluett), and Ryan, aunt Carol, uncles Roy, Bill and John, great niece Maddie and great nephew Luca, as well as several cousins. He also leaves behind three wonderful lifelong friends, Mike Treffler, Alan Bouvette and Dang Ponchareon, as well as his many friends from all over the world who he kept in touch with online.

He was predeceased by his father Joe, maternal grandparents, Christine & Roy Boutilier, paternal grandparents Elsie & Frank Mercer, aunt Dolly, uncle Ken and cousin Billy.

Information on a Celebration of Life will be communicated at a later date. As Joe was never into dressing up, dress will be casual and Tilley hats encouraged.

The family would like to thank the amazing staff at the QEII for their care and compassion; you are a credit to your occupation.

In Joe’s memory, please be kind to others and take whatever life throws at you in stride.

I worked with Joey at Fries and Co. many years ago. I knew him abit having gone to school with his sister Gail. Joey was such a nice guy and loved to have a laugh . It was easy to see his kindness and easygoing nature made him so easy to be around. He was clearly pure of heart. I would enjoy seeing his posts and photos when I creep my wife's Facebook. Saddened to hear of his passing as people like Joe, make the world a better place. Our condolences to Gail and the Mercer Family. Doug and Sharon Charlton.

Dear Mrs Mercer, Gail and Family... I was so sorry to hear of Joey's passing. I remember Joey from the time he was the most adorable little boy running around the neighbourhood. So polite, respectful and easygoing. I watched him grow into a wonderful man over the years.... so kind, thoughtful, so full of love for his Family, and the number one supporter of his Nephews and Great Niece and Nephew for whatever they were doing. Joey was truly one of those special souls who's light blessed all who knew him. Now his light will watch over you all from Heaven. Rest in Peace Joey and enjoy your new Angel Wings, my friend. Mrs Mercer, Gail and Family.... Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.... and may the many wonderful memories of Joey carry you through this very difficult time. Dar (Snyder) Peebles

After Joe and I made it through high school, He DJ'd with me for several years. Many late night pizzas, many many great laughs, and at time he kept me on my toes. Wela'lin for that Joe. We nicked named Joe "old reliable" as he was always there, no questions asked. Later on he called himself "Cotton Eyed Joe" Pictures to prove it, always having fun. We also shared our passion for Tilley hats. lol. May the Great Creator walk with you now and keep you safe there Nitap (friend).

I have had the pleasure of knowing Joe for over 38 years, and I was honored for him to be the Best Man at my wedding. Joe was one of the most optimistic people I have ever met, always looking at the positive in every situation, a true inspiration. Joe and I spent many enjoyable trips hanging out at our cottage when we were younger and we even enjoyed a memorable trip to New York City. Joe was a very special, caring person, who always had time for others, and chose to see the best in every person and situation. I am truly sorry for the loss that Joe's passing brings to each one of our lives and I thank God for blessing me with such a wonderful friend over the years. My sincere condolences to his family... He will be missed greatly. I was truly blessed to have Joe in my life. Rest in peace my friend...

A true friend and gentleman from the day we met more than 30 years ago. I've never met a kinder, selfless person who always cared to ask "how was your day" no matter what kind of day, good or bad, he had. It has been one of my life's great privileges to have had Joe as my friend. Take it easy Joe

Sending our love and prayers to the family. We were blessed to have Joey's mom (Mom Mercer) as our babysitter and so we knew very well of Joey's kindness and endless patience. We have fond memories of him sharing his toys (even his newest ones), especially his big basket of Lego. Joey will be missed. Thinking of all who Joey leaves behind. Lots of love, Nadine Aucoin-Titus XO.
