Obituary For Barry Wayne Polson

Barry Polson of Halifax died peacefully December 29th, 2023, at the Halifax Infirmary at age 69. He was the son of the late Carl and Joan (Lanigan) Polson. Barry was born and raised in Halifax and spent most of his working life in the city. He is survived by his partner, Donna Bonner, stepdaughter Tanyka Bonner, grandchildren TraVonte and Aaliyah (Bonner), sisters Karen and Debbie. He was well-known in the Halifax bar industry, working for many years at Gingers and the Seahorse Tavern. With his close friend the late Peter Norwood, he loved to sail and would come home to tell the tales of their adventures. Ian MacDonald, his childhood best friend, tended to Barry’s needs faithfully every day until the end of Barry’s journey. Special thanks to Ian for giving of his time. It meant a lot. He was “Poppy” to TraVonte and Aaliah and was always interested in their progress through life. Over the years he looked after the fur babies Sandy, Nila, Jonathan, Simba and Blue. He was often seen in his neighbourhood of Duncan St. ensuring Sandy and Nila got their daily exercises no matter what the weather was. Barry’s specialty was cooking and baking comfort food for the soul from his grandmother’s recipe box. He was a respectful, grateful, and humble man. He was known for his wicked sense of humor that would bring people to their knees with laughter. His humor will live on in our memories.

Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff on 8.2. You are wonderful human beings.

Per Barry’s request, there will be no visitation or service.

I am sorry to read of Barry's passing. I remember the old days in the neighbourhood when we played hide-and-seek or "street" hockey on the Stuarts' driveway or the rink my dad made in our yard. Barry and his sister Debbie were constantly at our house, hanging out and having fun with the gang. It sounds like he was a terrific step dad and I'm not in the least surprised. He will be sorely missed by many. My condolences go out to Karen and Debbie.

Barry nicknamed Donna's Green Bay buddies - "The Posse", because every year we'd come by to pick her up and then after a few days - drop her back. We are so sorry to hear of Barry's passing and send much love to you Donna and our best regards to Barry's family. Your Green Bay friends alias The Posse

I have very fond memories of Barry, we lived two doors down through our formative years. I can imagine the wonderful things he baked from his Grandmother's recipes, one could ice a cake like her! Barry taught me how to fold newspapers for delivery, was one of the Bicycle Gang in our 'hood, and was a fun tease... every time he saw my Aunt walking home he would put his thumbs in his ears, wiggle his fingers and stick out his tongue...a silent wave that turned to laughter! I hope you all hold onto such fond memories of Barry and that they comfort you.
