Obituary For Gerald Haggett

Our Dad Gerald Haggett passed away peacefully and was Promoted to Glory very early on Monday October 5, with his grandson Doran by his side.

Dad was born and grew up in Newfoundland where he married our Mom Marjorie Jean Stacey. All of us were born there: Pamela, Allan, Jeffry, and Sheldon. Dad’s work had us moving around pretty often and it was an amazing upbringing.

In his middle age, while we were living in Calgary, Dad and Mom decided to become full-time Envoys for the Salvation Army. We all grew up in the Salvation Army and thanks to Dad’s parents, Poppy and Nanny Roberts. Dad’s move to become an Envoy, a commitment to serve and care for others was not much of a surprise to us. (smile)

Not long after going to work for the Salvation Army, while living in Vancouver, our Mom passed away. When Dad remarried we were happy to welcome Lt-Colonel Evelyn Hammond to our family.

In the late 1990s, they moved to Halifax. Already living there were two of us: Allan and Jeff. We spent every Sunday and Thursday together as a family sharing lunch or supper. Gerald and Evelyn were active in the Salvation Army and attended the Halifax Citadel Community Church.

Every year or two some of the family from Australia would visit Halifax, especially his daughter Pam and his son-in-law Terry. Dad and Evelyn also visited the family in Australia twice during their time in Halifax.

Dad spent his final weeks at the Camp Hill hospital. He was only very sick for only a short time and was never in any real discomfort. There are no words to convey our appreciation for the nurses and staff on 3-East. They got to know Dad and provided him with loving care around the clock. We would also like to thank the staff at Parkstone Enhanced Care and at Continuing Care Nova Scotia.

Dad’s grandchildren are Paul, married to Michelle, Brianne, married to Christopher, and Doran. Dad’s great-grandchildren are Layla, Sam, Rosie, and Ellie.

We hope to have a service on Saturday, October 24. We will send out more information when the details are finalized. Feel free to contact us at ahaggett@gmail.com

In memory of Dad, you are invited to donate to a cause that he and Evelyn supported every year: the work of Dr. Paul Thistle and his wife Pedrinah in Zimbabwe. http://www.thistlesinzimbabwe.org/Donate.html

Thank you to all the family and friends who have supported us these last few months. It has been such a blessing and it honours Dad so well.

“What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,

Leaning on the everlasting arms.”

My sincere condolences to all of your family for your loss. His presence in a room just made you want to listen to what he said, and it was always worthwhile. I had the pleasure of working for Gerald and Marjorie in Calgary and have so many of my fondest memories from that time. He will be greatly missed, but lovingly remembered. May your own memories give you comfort.

My wife and I were very saddened and shocked to hear of Gerald's passing. We met him when he worked at Walmart and became fast friends with him and Evvie. Gerald was so full of life and a very sincere person. Gerald always found humour in everything and always managed to brighten your day. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his family and especially Evelyn. Sincerely, Gary and Flora LaViolette.

I always thought of Gerry as a beloved uncle. I will always remember his warm smile, infectious laugh and big bear hugs. He was the master of ceremonies at our wedding 42 years ago. He was a wonderful friend to my mom and dad, Fred and Barb Runions. Marge was my mom's best friend and my mom spent many hours at the hospital with Marjorie when Sheldon was ill and then they were there for us when my brother passed away. We were so happy when he met such a lovely Christian woman to spent his senior years with. Our thoughts and prayers are with Evelyn, Pam, Allan, Jeff and their families. His was a life well lived and we look forward to when we will see him again!

My sincere sympathy goes out to all the family. I am especially thinking of Evelyn just now as she is a very close and dear friend to me and has been for many years to my family. I last saw Gerald and Evelyn for lunch at the Pier in Halifax as I was passing through on a cruise along the East coast in 2015. We had a great visit that day. Please be assured of my prayers for all of you at this time. God Bless
