Obituary For Judy Bertha Simms
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Judy Bertha Simms, age 78, on September 11, 2026, at Ocean View Continuing Care Centre, where she had made her home for the past seven years.
Born to the late Effie and Lendo Simms, Judy lived throughout her life in Halifax and Dartmouth. She was predeceased by her sister, Ruth Simms, and her brother, Cliff Simms (Marlene, surviving). She is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephew, Judy Hardie (Glenn), Craig Simms (Karen) and Lisa Melanson (Kevin), as well as her five great-nephews, and Luke and Dot Woodrow, along with her friends and extended family.
Judy faced challenges from an early age after contracting polio, but she approached life with determination and a strong sense of independence. She never allowed her disability to stand in the way of pursuing the life she wanted. She was especially proud of her education at Dalhousie University and went on to enjoy a long career at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography.
Judy had many interests and an enduring curiosity about the world around her. An avid reader, she also enjoyed exploring music and various hobbies throughout her life. She was a talented knitter and took great pleasure in making handmade items for the children in her family. She loved animals, particularly her two cherished cats, and found great happiness in spending time with friends and family.
For many years, Judy was a member of Sail Able Nova Scotia, and some of her happiest times were spent on the water. She treasured the people in her life and had a generous spirit, something her family especially remembers at Christmas and on special occasions, when Judy took great pleasure in spoiling those she loved.
Judy was a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She will be remembered for her independence, generosity, resilience and the love she showed to the people and animals who shared her life.
Judy passed peacefully at Ocean View. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff who cared for her throughout her seven years there. Your compassion, kindness and loving care provided Judy with comfort and dignity, and will always be deeply appreciated.
In keeping with Judy’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place, and she will be laid to rest with her parents.
She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.
Condolences
