It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frances Jane Billard (Thorne), who passed away peacefully in Halifax on September 7, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s just a few weeks shy of her 83rd birthday.

Fran is survived by her daughters, Cathy Billard and Tina Hay (Dave); her son, Scott Billard (Amanda); her grandchildren, Carolyn Hall (Cody), Erin Hay, and Alex Billard; and her great-granddaughters, Cori and Casey, who lovingly knew her as their “white-haired Nanny.”

One of twelve children, Fran grew up with six sisters and five brothers and had many nieces and nephews whom she loved deeply. Coming from such a big family, she had no shortage of stories from those early years and loved reminiscing about growing up with all of her brothers and sisters.

Fran was quick-witted and a little mischievous. She had a wonderful sense of humour, loved telling stories and took great pleasure in teasing those she loved. Family gatherings were always an important part of Fran’s life, and many wonderful memories were made surrounded by family, food and laughter.

Over the years, Fran often said that when her time came, she would return as a crow. It became one of those little things that was uniquely hers, and we will think of her whenever a crow happens to appear nearby.

Fran will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves behind many stories, laughs and memories that her family will continue to share for years to come.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home. We are forever grateful for the kindness, care, patience and love you showed Fran.

In keeping with Fran’s wishes, there will be no funeral service or celebration of life.
