Obituary for Reginald Eli Hillier

It is with immense sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Reginald Eli Hillier, 63, of Brookside, on October 26th, 2020.

Reggie was born in 1957 to Thelma (Brenton) and Reginald Hillier of Spryfield. In 1980, he married high school sweetheart Debbie (Page) and later welcomed daughters Crystal and Sarah. For over 30 years, he was employed as a letter carrier for Canada Post where he made many close friends.

Reggie was a gentle giant who loved jokes, pranks, fact checking and classic rock. He had a great love of Motocross, racing in his younger years and watching from the sidelines in his later years. He enjoyed computer gaming where he met friends from all over the world. He loved to travel, spending many weeks each winter in warmer climates. His favorite part of vacations was always the food. After retiring, Reggie discovered a love of baking. He enjoyed friendly banter with friends over coffee and loved special occasions and Sunday suppers with his family. He was so proud of his two daughters and loved spending time with them and his granddaughter Emily. The many family cats were always affectionately underfoot and by his side.

Reggie was someone who could fix or build anything and always went the extra mile to help anyone who needed it if they wanted it or not. He loved finding a good deal and teasing Toronto Maple Leaf fans while cheering on his team the Montreal Canadiens. Fun times were always had chatting and spending time with his sister Margie and her family. Many laughs were had with best friends Craig Miles, Sandy Perkins, late Donnie Mielke and many others.

Reggie was predeceased by parents Thelma and Reginald Hillier and mother-in-law Marie Page. He will be greatly missed by wife Debbie, sister Margaret (Greg) Mountain, daughters Crystal (Jeff) Boutilier and Sarah (Darren Ide) Hillier, granddaughter Emily, father-in-law Daniel (Brenton) Page close nieces and nephews and many close cousins. He will also be greatly missed by his large network of friends.

Special thanks to the staff at the QE II Health Sciences Center. In lieu of flowers, donations in Reggie’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or your local SPCA.. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.

Dear Debbie and family. Please accept my condolences at your loss. Although it has been many years since Reggie and I worked together at Armdale P.O., I remember him well as a fun co-worker and a good person to be around. I was reminded of Reggie yesterday when I saw a carrier making his rounds while wearing shorts on a rare snow day here in Vancouver. We hope and pray that you will find peace and comfort. Best regards, Jim (and Joan) Takaoka

Dear Debbie - so very sorry to hear of Reggie's passing. I tried to send condolences earlier but was unable to so Carole Woodhall is letting me use her laptop to connect with you. Reggie was so very full of life and brought much laughter and energy to the workplace. I hope that all of your memories of Reg will help you heal and get through this difficult time. Take care of yourself and your daughters and Reg will remain with you in spirit. Remember this. Love Wendy Watson Smith

Hi Debbie and family. I was shocked and saddened when I heard this news. I've not seen you guys in a while but I often think of all the friends from our group in Spryfield many years ago. Time certainly has a way of slipping by much too fast. Just wanted to let you know that our thoughts are with you. From my family to yours.

Dear Debbie, Crystal and Sarah, I am heartbroken to hear about your loss. It was always a pleasure to see Reg in the neighbourhood. Just this summer he and Craig were helping me with my car. It gave me a chuckle to see Reg emerge from the drivers seat of my tiny car after testing it out. It was not a comfortable fit, but he did it anyway. Thank you, Reg and prayers to all of you.

Sincere sympathy to you and your family Debbie on the sudden death of your beloved Reggie. As others have said, he was "bigger than life". He exuded an innate confidence and I remember him expressing how proud he was of the relationship he had with his daughters. You will miss him deeply and carry sorrow for a long time. Lean on each other for comfort and support during this difficult time of grieving.

Dear Debbie and Family, It was such sad news to hear about Reggie's passing so young and so suddenly. Sending sincere and heartfelt condolences your way. Me and my friend Donnie met Reg riding our dirt bikes up and down Dunbrack St. during the construction and up behind the Tim Horton's all those years ago. He was around 6 years older than us but became a great friend and mentor, taking us to the motocross races in his Delta 88 while we listened to Steve Miller 8-tracks; helping with advice, repairs and modifications (especially with my prized YZ 125); working to get the MX track built out in Sackville; and organizing the short-lived Metro Dirt Riders Association! He was such a positive and fun person to be around - a bigger than life presence! - and I was especially fortunate and blessed to have Reggie's advice and kindness at that age. He was like an older brother! I live in Colorado now and started riding dirt bikes again several years ago. I think of Reg all the time when riding and imagine how much he would enjoy the incredible and expansive off-road trails and amazing views in the Rocky Mountains. May you find comfort from friends and family and wonderful memories at this very difficult time. I'll never forget you Reg!! Sincerely, Scott Casey
