Obituary For Ann "Lonnie" MacKenzie

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ann (Lonnie) MacKenzie at Parkstone Shannex in Halifax on Febrary 6, 2023 with her loving family by her side. Ann was born in Glace Bay in 1943, she grew up in McKay’s Corner, eventually residing in Table Head Glace Bay. Ann is survived by her three children Darren (Karla) MacKenzie, Chester (Tracy LeFler) MacKenzie, and Catherine Mackenzie as well as her grandchildren, Matthew (Stephanie) MacKenzie, Adam (Victoria) MacKenzie and Laci Ann MacKenzie. Along with her great grandchild Ciara Lee MacKenzie

Ann was pre-deceased by her late loving husband Chester MacKenzie Jr, her parents Joseph MacAdam and Vina MacDougall. Her sisters Babe MacAdam, Mary Ellen Teiro (Al). Her special Aunts Mary O’Hanley, Georgia Gillis, Marie McNeil, Allena Rousellis, Viola O’Connor and her close cousin Mary Tellum, along with many nieces and nephews.

Ann first worked for the Metropolitan Department Store in the Sterling Mall. Later after raising her 3 children she turned her hobby of ceramics into a business and opened Lonnie’s Ceramics on Commercial Street in Glace Bay with her husband Chester.

Ann’s love was camping on the Mira River at Burkes Campsite, bonfires every night and sing alongs with a great group of friends. She was an avid bowler, joining various leagues around Glace Bay. She also played mixed darts at North Street Community Hall. She also enjoyed going to bingo and playing cards with family and friends.

In retirement Ann moved to Halifax in 2010 to be closer to her son and daughter. She joined the Golden Age Centre (Forever young at Heart) on Herring Cove Road and enjoyed meeting new friends. She was an active member in the club playing darts, attending dinners, dance, road trips with the group and volunteering. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 152 in Spryfield and CWL (Catholic Woman’s League) of the Stella Maris Parish. Ann loved volunteering and meeting new people with the clubs and organizations that was affiliated with.

Then came the birth of her grandchild Laci Ann in the last year of her life who she loved and adored, Ann got to spend some precious moments with spending her First Christmas together and seeing her take her first steps.

The Mackenzie Family would like to pass along a special thanks in Ann’s honour to:

Dr. Laurie Mallery who followed Ann the last few years and helped manage her health care needs.

The Dialysis Team at the Victoria General who cared for Ann for the last four years as she battled kidney disease.

All the CCA’s from Closing the Gap that provided home care.

Family friend Iris, for being there for Ann and helping during her health struggles.

To the entire staff at Parkstone Shannex who became part of her family. She enjoyed all the activities, the connections and friendships she made there. She truly felt at home there, which was confirmed whenever we had her out for outings or supper and she would say okay take me home now. Our family will be forever grateful, and we can’t thank you enough for everything you have done for our Mom.

When I first met Ann we hit it off. I started playing darts at Forever Young Seniors Club. She convinced me to join this club so I did. I am so happy for her advice. The members there are so pleasant and we have a lot of fun. Ann, I love you and you will always be in my heart.

Lonnie will truly be sorrowfully missed. She was someone who took great pride in artistically putting so much beauty into this world. Many of her family's creations are still front and centre in endless homes; for other generations to enjoy for years to come. That is a beautiful legacy. She was the first person in my life who fostered my TRUE love of everything ARTISTIC; telling me to always make time to enjoy doing what you love. I have so many happy memories of her endless ceramic, art and craft sessions. Lonnie so enjoyed imparting her tricks of the trade to me when scouring years of yard sales and flea markets. She was a TRUE PRO at finding and negotiating a great bargain. To this day when I pick up a paintbrush or look at one of my many ceramics she helped me paint over the years...I will always remember her laugh, hugs and endless tricks of her finely crafted trade. Our loss is truly Heaven's gain! Love you always. Carrie Currie

Miss you so much mom. Love you to moon and back. If roses grow in heaven, Lord please pick a bunch for me, Place them in my Mother's arms and tell her they're from me. Tell her I love her and miss her, and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for awhile. Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, but there's an ache within my heart that will never go away.
