Obituary For Mona Rezk Attia

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mona Rezk Attia on March 5, 2023. Mona was born in Cairo in 1939. She was fascinated by the history of art and philosophy, and earned her Masters in French Literature. While in Egypt, her zest for life led her to many areas of work, including a correspondent journalist for the Asahi Shimbun Japanese newspaper, a translator in the Arab league, and a tour guide in Egypt. The latter led her to starting a large touring company. She moved to Canada in 1968 and married her soulmate, Dr. Elhamy Attia. In Montreal, she taught French to adolescents in a polyvalent school, having a gift for connecting with troubled teens. Her real passion was for the Coptic Church. She was a prayer warrior and her faith was unfailing in all her trials and tribulations. When she moved to Halifax in 1987, she was instrumental in establishing the first Coptic Orthodox Church in the Maritimes. Mona was a devoted mother of her two children.

She was known by all for her unparalleled hospitality, and anyone who was welcomed into her home was fed a delectable homemade feast they will never forget.

She was predeceased by her mother, Margaret, and her father, Rezk. She is survived by her husband (Elhamy), her daughters Nada (James Marshall) and Tammy (Donald Ilott), her beloved grandchildren, Ronan, Diego, Jaime, and Miriam, as well as her brothers, Rafik and Reda, and her sister, Miriam.

Her funeral will be held in St. Mena Coptic Orthodox Church, 167 Willet St, Halifax, NS on Thursday, March 9 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, please send charity donations to: Donate Now | Coptic Orphans

She will be dearly missed by all – her warm smile, her infectious laugh, and the tender care she gave to all she knew. Rest in peace and joy, and never stop praying for us as fervently as you did for us in this world.
