Obituary For Suther Alexander Yuill
Age 77, of Hubley (formerly Bedford) passed away October 22, 2023. Born on July 19, 1946 in Truro, to the late Carlyle and Betty (Matheson) Yuill
Suther's life was marked by his love for sailing, passion for problem solving service, and deep connections with his friends. Suther will be profoundly missed by his wife of 55 years, Gail (Purdy) Yuill; his son, Terry (Lynn) Yuill of Bedford; and grandson Nicholas. Additionally, Suther leaves behind his brother John and sisters Donna Stalker and Dianna Berry
An avid athlete in his earlier years, Suther played football for Acadia, a member of the NS provincial downhill ski team and Canadian Ski Patroller; he continued to ski until a few years ago. His true passion was sailing. He raced hard, downhill and on the water. His sailing boats Awesome, Audacious and Atlantic Storm were his favourite pastime. You may not have always agreed with him, but you always could learn from him. Sailing was part of his DNA which has been passed on to his son and grandson. He was an active member of St Margaret Sailing Club, and previously at Bedford Basin Yacht Club. He competed in several Marblehead to Halifax Ocean races, as well as international events in Florida and managed and participated with the winning Nova Scotia team in the 1984 Challenge Labatt Cup. He won several local regattas and was always a challenge on the start line.
His life as a civil engineer afforded him to have great satisfaction in the many projects he was involved in professionally. His career blossomed at Jacques Whitford where he focussed on the environmental engineering field. Leading many projects, locally and globally, he loved the challenge and always developed a team that was strong, dedicated and successful. Suther was very determined in everything he did and was always willing to provide his project management and engineering abilities to solve a problem or devise a solution for a friend or an organisation regardless of how challenging. He will be missed by many.
A celebration of Suther’s life will be held at the St Margerets Sailing Club, 5 Foxberry Hill Rd, Glen Haven, NS B3Z 2W2 on November 3rd at 1 PM.
In Suther’s memory, Donations can be made to VON or the Junior Sailing program at SMSC
