Obituary For Kenneth Alasdair Munro

After 87 full years, Kenneth Alasdair Munro left us peacefully on May 1, 2026, surrounded by family.
We will miss the laughter, the support, the relentless wit, the competitiveness at the card table, and the way he could take over a room with nothing more than a laugh or a look.

He was born to the late Ernest Frasier Munro and Hedwig Wilhelmina Munro (Theuerkauf) in Sydney on Cape Breton Island. Early years were spent in Sydney where his Grandfather A.P Theuerkauf worked at Sydney Steel and summers in Margaree Harbour at the Munro family farm.

Ken would meet the love of his life, Judith Dianne Munro (Young) at Dartmouth High School in the 50s. They married in 1962 and started their family in Toronto, added to it in Montreal and welcomed their third son in Moncton. Date nights were special. The Chicken Burger in Bedford was an early favorite where he would take Judy on high school dates, a special treat he was still enjoying in 2026.

Ken spent 25 years at the Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission where he retired as Treasurer at 71.

An avid reader, Ken always had a novel on the go and a stack on his bedside table. Taking the family to the movies was a regular experience, where we were always first in line. Ken loved playing games all his life, from strategy games to family board games to cutthroat card games. He even was an avid Dungeons and Dragons player with his sons in the 80s.

More of a Jetson than a Flintstone, Ken appreciated tech toys. From early Video Disc Players, TRS-80s and PC Jrs, he ensured we were the house his kids’ friends wanted to hang out in. He loved having the latest gadgets… setting them up, however, was a different story.

Ken loved a good road trip, be it a family vacation in the old station wagon, Sunday drives exploring the backroads of New Brunswick or taking the long way home along the coast with Judy.

When you think about the dream marriage, 63 years married to his high school sweetheart is not just rare, it’s remarkable. Almost 70 years together and even with health struggles he would always light up with a smile at the sight of Judy. They truly were each other’s batteries.

As a father, Ken set the standard. His three sons, Alan Munro (Claire Munro), Glen Munro (Linda Munro) and Kirk Munro (Janice Boudreau) all carry forward his values, willingly taking on his ethics, caring, and strong sense of right and wrong.

Thankfully Ken’s legacy will continue. Ken couldn’t have been prouder of his six grandchildren, Lara and Chantal (daughters of Alan and Claire), Kale and Hannah-Jayne (son and daughter of Glen and Linda) and Jérémie and Émilie (son and daughter of Kirk and Janice).

Family was everything to Ken. He delighted in visits whether it was by his sister, Mora Bussey (Wayne Bussey); his sisters-in-law, Pat Chung (George Chung) and Susan Smith (Dayle Smith); and the late Sandra McKenzie (Allen McKenzie), along with many nieces and nephews.

Ken brought the big laugh with family, the beautiful voice in church, and the big heart with his grandkids.

We will be celebrating his life and legacy at All Apostles by the Sea Anglican Church on May 16, 2026, at (~11:00). While we know that after he makes sure everything is in its place in heaven, he will have found a comfy chair with a glass of the Captain and coke on one side, and his remote at the ready in hand, enjoying his moments and thinking of Judy.

Any donations wanting to be donated, the family would appreciate donations to the Twin Oaks / The Birches Health Care Charitable Foundation where the caring staff were so supportive to Ken over the last few years.
